Minyan is a real throwback to the type of queer cinema made in the 1990s.

So uh, I guess that would now be considered Old Queer Cinema then.

In some respects due to its low key drama. It took a while for queer cinema to take on some lighter subject matter after all those 80s drama and this one is set in the 80s so it shares a grim underlining vibe.

The DVD of Minyan appears to be barebones; Lola and the Sea has a director interview.

Such a shame they've seemingly given up on blu-ray.

Yea. Minyan was announced as Blu Ray originally and still no sign of the wonderful And Then We Danced (which as least has a US Blu Ray, though it is region locked).

I was on the fence about Minyan. I liked it's gritty retro feel and it was normally something I wouldn't buy but was going to purchase the Blu Ray release to support Peccadillo Pictures. I'm not purchasing a the DVD though.

all these smaller Brit labels are always skimping out and going DVD only in 2022 is very annoying. Both LGBTQ and smaller Horror titles DVD only over here.

Peccadillo Pictures is having an Easter Sale, which I'm sure probably ends today. Sorry for the late notice, but I just found out about it yesterday. And I didn't even know this thread existed.

In regards to DVD only, I messaged them on YT about My First Summer and dvd only in general and while they didn't go into much detail they said
"Blu-rays are prohibitively expensive to create and duplicate so we are very selective on which titles we release in this format. Very few make it worthwhile to release for us, alas. Piracy certainly doesn't help, either."
It's a crappy situation as I would love to have a bluray of it, it's such a gorgeous film. However, considering the dvd is the only physical release available in the world, I didn't have much choice.
Talking of My First Summer, has anyone else watched it, I don't think I've seen a film like it in my life. Any recommendations of similar films?

Well, unfortunately, that's the case with most LGBT cinema. There's just not a big enough market for it. The US distributors, like FilmRise, Strand Releasing, and Wolfe Video, are in the same boat.

And while I haven't seen My First Summer, the vibes I get from the trailer are: My Summer of Love, Summertime, The Summer of Sangailė, and Clementine.

Instead of blaming piracy I would blame the dozens of LGBTQ productions that are just at best forgettable and at worst a mere excuse for viewers to get an eyeful. Francois Ozon recently said that when a movie is sold in the LGBTQ section instead of Drama or Comedy it's not a good sign. I totally agree even though there are some true gems to find there, fortunately.

I think Peccadillo usually has good taste in what titles they acquire, better than TLA (though there are gems in that catalogue too). It’s a shame their titles are so hard to find in cinemas and barely released on BD. Though I suppose it’s a miracle at all they’re still releasing DVDs, with Curzon and Dogwoof abandoning DVD only releases in favour of safe BD options and VOD exclusives. Modern Films only recently belatedly released DVDs of their last two years of VOD titles. But it is weird organising my collection, having a long row of BDs then coming across DVDs of very recent films.

I watched the DVD of Departure recently, good film but not a great DVD transfer, I noticed aliasing when there was movement. Maybe they squeezed too much on with the film, extras and trailer gallery. Of course there’s no BD alternative from another territory, as with much of their catalogue. But I’m more likely to watch a film when there’s a disc available, than only being available on digital, even if a HD stream in theory should look better than a DVD, though perhaps not sound as good.

I’ll buy a DVD when it’s cheap but definitely not when it’s £10. I suppose it’s a difficult decision, enough people need to buy enough BDs to justify pressing them, and I’m sure even 1000 copies are difficult to shift sometimes. DVDs make sense for institutions/libraries and casual viewers, or an older viewer might not have the equipment or as good eyesight. It’s a double edged sword as DVDs mean I will buy less titles from them, unlike 2020/21 where it seemed like they had put more focus into BD.

Thankfully You and the Night just got a US Blu from AI, I have my issues with them sometimes (lots of barebones discs and some of the slips could be better) they at least stopped doing BD-Rs and it seems to be selling pretty well.

Not sure I’ll get anything from the sale. Many I already own or watched already, many are a similar price from other retailers. Don’t know if The Collini Case has any extras and the German BD is inexpensive anyway, I assume the Q&A on Lola and the Sea is the same hour long piece that is on Peccadillo’s YouTube, and Sequin I don’t know if the extras are of any substance to justify owning it.

Thankfully another Blu-ray is on the horizon, with the Boys on Film short film anthology Love to Love You coming on June 27th.

https://shop.peccapics.com/products/...ve-you-blu-ray

Swan Song is a windowed cinema release playing (at least in one off showings, though perhaps more could be added) in ODEON and Picturehouse, but still seems to be DVD only on 29th August.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Swan-Song-D...dp/B09VWRRVF6/

Luzzu will be DVD only, released 1st August.

Swan Song will have a slip, with the slip depicting the artwork I think is stronger - with Pitsenbarger looking flamboyant and the filmís supporting characters depicted in picture frames - while the standard art is the theatrical poster Iím less big on as it depicts a scene quite insignificant and late in the film, with him in a wheelchair alongside street traffic.

I rarely buy DVDs of new films but Luzzu (under the Peccadillo Panorama banner) has some strong extras listed on Amazon that I might have to:

Quote:
Interview with Writer/ Director Alex Camilleri
Audio Commentary by Alex Camilleri
Test Footage 'Lampuki' & 'Slipway'
Jesmark Scicluna Screen Test
Theatrical Trailer
