Confirmed, I just checked.

Just curious, is this footage that was previously missing in the remasters HD or upscaled? The later would make more sense of them being missing earlier.

Yep.

Even if The Gathering is locked into SD forever more, it still deserves treated properly. They could upscale it in proper 4:3, convert to 24p to remove the pulldown and interlaced artefacts and tidy up any tape artefacts. And sorry to bang on about this again, present both cuts not just one. The SE might be more consistent with the show but I've always got a soft spot for the original cut with the muppets and horribly early-90s score.

I actually have the original unaltered Gathering two different ways-- a Japanese LD (which has Japanese subs unfortunately) and the original iTunes digital copy downloaded, so old it was before the TNT version. Of course the quality of it sucks. Still, nice to have though. I'd be fine with just the TNT one if they were to master it properly. Wonder how many people get turned off watching it on HBO max because they start with it and the picture is so cropped/blurry they give up...

I have the original unaltered Pilot on VHS which, as for as I know, is the only time the original was released as a physical copy available in the USA.

Wiki also says that the original Gathering was released on a German DVD.

An NTSC copy of The Gathering was included within the DVD boxset IIRC, based on the Special Edition aired on TNT. Not sure how the quality is compared to the one available for streaming at Amazon.

Watched Midnight on the Firing Line, Soul Hunter, Born to the Purple and Infection and so far things look pretty good. The dip between live action and composite shots is noticeable, but not as jarring as they were on the DVDs. Similarly the VFX, it's noticeably lower rez and the VFX are crude by today's standards anyway, but again they still look better than they do on the DVDs. All in all, a most worthy endeavour by WBs.....now give us blus please!

Yep. And although the individual UK release first used the SE the version this was quietly replaced at some point as the one I have in the complete UK box set is also the original. I’d previously been hanging onto the old VHS for the original cut.

They have so far never done the sensible thing and included both on any release. It’s always one or the other.

All DVD iterations of The Gathering have remained 4:3 regardless of which cut they used. The streaming version currently has the top and bottom crudely chopped to make it 16:9.

Still not fixed on iTunes, sadly.

Great interview with Bruce Boxleitner about B5 to HBO MAX, Mira Furlan and B5 memories!

I'm making my way through the show in HD on HBO Max. I'm on the second episode of the second season and with Season 2, the picture quality has improved some from season 1. Contrast and colors are better and there is a slight increase in sharpness. The picture seems more stable then that of season 1.
