Keep in mind VIZ Media is actually taking a risk here, and likely paid a good amount for the show as NTV pretty much funded almost the entire thing (VAP and Madhouse who were also on the production committee are owned by NTV). Shueisha was on the production committee, but left when the show went to being on at night.

Also long shows historically have struggled, even if they're popular. How many of those did VIZ Media alone drop again? If you don't want Hunter x Hunter to suffer the same fate as shows like The Prince of Tennis, Monster, and MAR, you better actually buy it. Waiting for price drops and all that won't help. Doing that hurts sales of the initial release which are the most important for making the money back. FUNi didn't get the rest of say Big Windup! because of those sorts of people, and hardly anyone bought the initial sets.

I don't see the issue here. You pay about $3/episode for both English and Japanese.

Most customers aren't going to shell out 500 bucks for a 148 episode series.

Even Bleach was just released around the same price point with 27 episodes on the first blu ray volume.

Then you have to consider that there will likely be a complete definitive collection at some point. Everyone also knows that with a long series like this there will sales on it eventually. Initial sales figures will probably be abysmal.

Uh, Bleach first hit DVD in singles, and then 20 or so episode box sets before switching to 13 or so episode box sets after the singles were dropped. The first Bleach single hit in 2006 and the first box set hit in 2007. It only makes sense after all this time a Blu-ray re-release would be less, especially when the dubbing work was done and licensing costs were paid long ago. Hunter x Hunter is a new show, and they have plenty of costs they have yet to recoup. They need to charge this much to make it back.

As for a complete set, so how about that complete Naruto set? That complete Dragon Ball set? That complete InuYasha set? Oh wait, only Madman in Australia is really doing that.

Complaining about $40 for 13 episodes. Really. Just be glad it isn't an Aniplex title. Some people

They have to hit a nice mark on the first set. If they do that, it's smooth sailing for the remaining 11-12 sets. $500 across, what? 12-24 months? That's nothing..

"But I need to save as much money as humanly possible! I buy things only on Black Friday and wait for S.A.V.E. to ensure I save as much money as possible!"

Doesn't that sound stupid? That's what you're kinda sounding like.

Seems legit to me. I'd pay more for a nicer set to support such an awesome series.

this entire forum is dedicated to the materialistic ownership of blu ray media and some of you guys act surprised or offended when other people discuss pricing or value.

I would too. I binged Hunter x Hunter and it was amazing. Would gladly spend extra for a nice premium set.

I wouldn't be caught dead with a S.A.V.E. release. They are so terrible looking and garbage.

Because we're tired of certain ignorant statements people have regarding price, there are even people that think even S.A.V.E. is too damn high! And remember, this is first and foremost a business, VIZ Media needs to make their money back, and this is how they need to do it. If it doesn't sell, they may even drop it.

Indeed, even with the reversible-covers I still have a problem with them as you get the same cover twice and lose artwork from the previous release. I'm also stuck with two sets where you can't reverse the cover, Air: The Motion Picture and Suzuka.

I only get them when there's not much choice, and so far I own less than 10 of them.

Don't forget that Toonami is currently airing Hunter X Hunter. Will (hopefully) give it a nice boost as they start to release these sets. I think Hunter X Hunter will do great.

That I'm crazy, but also passionate about my hobby? I have no problem spending a lot of money to support it.
