I had a look yesterday, that is one mighty offload, but nothing really grabbed my interest. I hope whoever traded all that in isn't in financial trouble.

There are not many better feelings than hearing the CeX staff say "Actually this one's priced incorrectly, it's coming up as cheaper"

This feels like a bargain at £8 and has been near the top of my watchlist for ages:

Or could just be a bereavement and the family want a simple option for quick cash without giving everything to a charity shop? CEX give you peanuts (some only 10-20p - though not the case for everything as some will be more in CEX than their new value), but peanuts is more than nothing especially when a lot of discs don’t move on Facebook Marketplace (unless it’s something rarer or you’re in some groups), and with eBay once you sink £3 into postage and a percentage of the sale into fees, you’re not exactly left with much anyway.

I also picked up a copy in CEX back in 2018 or so, though think it was closer to £12, this at least includes The Little Match Girl short film compared to the more recent reissue. Though the glue on the disc holder has pretty much separated from the cardboard! It’s definitely worth double checking titles you leave behind again sometimes, as the price can lower by a few quid over weeks/days (though sometimes the opposite happens!). Though some of the titles in the StudioCanal Collection have been upgraded to 4K, like Breathless, The Servant, The Elephant Man, Mulholland Drive and others (Delicatessen and The Pianist are strongly rumoured), there’s still reasons to hold onto titles like To Be or Not to Be, The Trial, Le mepris, Le Cercle Rouge, 3 Days of the Condor, The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum for unique extras that don’t appear on their reissues, and I think there’s a simplicity to the design (though doesn’t translate as well to the standard reissue of Condor with the same artwork!)

I don’t really blind buy that often (Troll was more of that as seems like a lot of people had fun with it and the documentary about the cult fandom is well reviewed), I’m aware of most of the UK editions that are out there, and have a pretty long wishlist that’s kind of exhausting (This is England had been on the list for pretty much a decade) and I don’t know how I’ll ever watch everything I buy. But I also like the feeling of excitement and discovery that comes with a blind buy. I do still take into consideration extras, streaming options, reviews, eBay listings at a similar price, price history (find it harder to justify a Criterion at £10 or £12, even when it’s a good deal, when they tend to go in 2 for £25 - £8 hits the sweet spot as a more substantial discount), so ultimately what I end up buying is much smaller than where I started. I left behind a few titles because of marks to the cases or the shift away from Amaray cases which would look inconsistent. But I’m running out of shelving and boxes so will need to be careful. Some of the films in the haul I had already seen: La haine I’ve already seen most of the extras from Optimum’s DVD steelbook which included the soundtrack, I saw the 4K remaster in ODEON in 2020, the extras on the first disc are on BFI’s YouTube channel and there’s a 4K disc in France - but there’s still value in having it as it’s such a good film, I don’t think the Assassins short film has surfaced elsewhere with English subtitles, the casting and deleted scenes that initially appeared on the French DVD weren’t on the UK one, and of course it comes with a book. Fences I saw on release in 2017 and found it really moving, but six years is a long time and comes with a few featurettes and as I love Washington and Davis as actors, I figured it would be worth the revisit for a couple of quid.
