A super-duper edition for the holidays with 2D + 3D discs, extras, and a new Atmos track on both versions would seem like a smart marketing move for all parties involved (Dolby included). The extras that should have been released already were probably done months and months ago. Check. A 3D encode was already completed and released to Europe and Asia. Check. All that's left is a supervised home Atmos remix and encoding. Last edited by FilmFreakosaurus; 06-29-2014 at 05:37 AM. |

Which title do you guys think will first appear on Blu-ray? I have a feeling it's Godzilla 2014 movie. This title has been brought up several times in the last few weeks since its announcement, I'd be surprised if this won't make an appearance. |

Dolby is designating official Atmos speaker/sub outputs for a particular licensed Atmos product. Any additional subwoofer outputs are created by bass management in the individual receivers or pre-amps, as always. There's still only one Low Frequency Effects channel like before.
9.1.4 could be allowed in some 2nd generation products... up to 24 mains + 10 overheads. It all depends on the individual manufacturer and how they want to implement Atmos' capabilities. Yes, that's right. Consumer Atmos soundtracks are capable of 34 discrete outputs, or about half of the commercial version. Last edited by FilmFreakosaurus; 06-30-2014 at 12:37 AM. |

I'm still thinking that Gravity SE and Frozen 3D SE and later Holiday video releases are the prime candidates right now because of the time it might take to prep the Atmos tracks.
The studios may be bastards and release special Atmos "Exclusive" packs at a "special" high price or as part of incentives to buy Atmos capable gear like they did for 3D until the format is more of a mainstay. And you'll have to wait for the individual releases. Now, that would be beyond stupid, but who said their marketing departments were ever smart to begin with. ![]() Last edited by FilmFreakosaurus; 06-30-2014 at 03:33 AM. |

They're probably up to something... dumbing theatrical Atmos/7.1 tracks down to 5.1 on Blu-ray to make the "super-deluxe" Atmos version seem even better.
I wouldn't put it past the studios. Just look at Sony and their high-bitrate Mastered for 4k discs. All studio titles could at least be high bitrate if they wanted to. |

Just using cheap stereo headphones right now for Blu-rays, DVDs, the defeated format, and video games. EDIT: I'll also be buying the PNY 770 4GB GPU eventually. |

There is DTS Headphone X. Which simulates 11.1 surround. But seriously, it defeats the purpose of having Atmos in the first place if all you're going to listen in is with Headphones.

Anyway, I'm saying that the benefits of Atmos will be lost using headphones. Sorry, but it's true. Stick with what you have. |

The only way this works is if you are able to bitstream the raw Dolby TrueHD+Atmos track from your PC to one of the Atmos receivers. Generally, I don't see this as an issue. Of course, we have to wait for the actual products to see if it doesn't otherwise.
The specifications of your PC is irrelevant. Even if you do get yourself one of the Atmos receivers and plug in your headphones, it will not be able to represent the height channels at all. Even with the DTS Headphone X format I mentioned earlier requires a specially encoded soundtrack first in order for it to work. |

Dolby ATMOS for the home will support up to 32 channels over HDMI 2.0. According to the article a new A/V receiver that has 32 audio channels is being built for Dolby ATMOS. All existing Blu-ray players that offer the bitstream feature will be able to send Dolby ATMOS soundtracks over HDMI to a Dolby ATMOS A/V receiver. New Blu-ray discs that are encoded with Dolby ATMOS have an extension to the 7.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack that will allow up to 32 audio channels when using a 32 channel Dolby ATMOS A/V receiver. For streaming providers Dolby Digital Plus will use scalable algorithms to offer Dolby ATMOS surround sound.
The following are select quotes from the Twice article “San Francisco — Dolby Labs revealed more details about the home-theater version of its Dolby Atmos surround technology, pointing out that Atmos will support as many as 24 speakers on the floor and 10 overhead speakers.” ““One of our hardware partners is planning to release an A/V receiver with 32 channels,” said Brett Crockett, Dolby’s sound research director, in a Friday post on the company’s website.” “The company also explained how Dolby Atmos soundtracks will be made available on Blu-ray discs playable on existing Blu-ray players.“ We wanted to ensure that entertainment fans could get Dolby Atmos movies in the same ways they get movies now, on Blu-ray Disc or through streaming video services,” Crockett said. “We invented new scalable algorithms and extensions to Dolby TrueHD, our Blu-ray format, and Dolby Digital Plus, which is used by leading streaming video providers. Both formats now support Dolby Atmos sound, meaning that you’ll be able to play Dolby Atmos movies from your Blu-ray player or through your favorite streaming service.”” Last edited by HDTV1080P; 07-10-2014 at 05:30 PM.
