Arrow Fritz Lang on Blu-ray

I just finished watching the first part of Fritz Lang's Die Nibelungen last night, and I was just blown away. The film is an amazing achievement, considering when it was made . The same can of course be said about Metropolis, one of the most influential films of our time. Lang had such an impressive, and varied body of work, spanning from fantasy, to Sci-Fi, to Film noir, and wartime thrillers. I believe this work should be seen by all, so I figured we should have a centralized thread to discuss his work available on Blu-ray, and for newcomers to learn more about his films.

I would love Blu-ray Disc releases of Fury (1936) and Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.

Sadly, I've only seen Ministry of Fear and M, both of which were outstanding. I'll have to check out more of his titles.

So far, I've liked everything I own that Fritz Lang directed, M, Dr.Mabuse: The Gambler, Metropolis, The Testament of Dr.Mabuse, & The Big Heat. I hope to get Frau Im Mond, Spione, Die Nibelungen, Scarlet Street,Man Hunt, & Secret Beyond The Door. He is one of the greatest Directors.

Spione, I forgot about that one. I don't think anyone added it to the DB yet

Great thread!

I own all of the Region A playable Fritz Lang Blu-rays except for Die Nibelungen. I need to scratch that itch and pull the trigger on Die Nibelungen soon, because everything else that I own from the director is marvelous.

My collection includes the above-listed Spanish disc of You Only Live Once, and I will verify that it is a good-looking disc that is English friendly both in terms of audio and subtitles.

The Big Heat and Man Hunt are two of my favorite Twilight Time titles.

Great thread idea, Mifune.

I have seen a handful of his films, both available and not available on Blu-ray, and nothing comes close to Metropolis for me. It's one of the greatest films to ever be made about humanity.

Thanks MifuneFan for this thread and for the head up on few of his films I didn't know was on BD. Many Lang films are my favourites.

Also I recommend the Italian You Only Live Once, does anybody know of the differences between the Italian and the Spanish BDs?

Awesome thread! Thanks for putting it together.

The Big Heat is also available in other countries as well. Maybe add them to your list above? Might be helpful to some since the TT version has been unavailable for some time now.

the "indian" epics on the german bluray do actually look the same and sometimes even worse than the MoC DVDs ... ;(

same for some of the spanish blurays. and the olive blurays are at best medicore..

its a shame that lang movies got released like that.

not to mention the "resen" bluray from spain thats most likely just a copy of the TT release. (some of their releases are BD-R)

To any Lang fans who have not watched Die Nibelungen, you are missing a mind-blowing experience. That movie and Metropolis show so much ambition and vision, Lang was doing things 90 years ago that most modern film fans assume were beyond the imagination of anyone working before the CGI era, it's basically Lord of the Rings. And the Gottfried Huppertz scores restored on the BDs for Die Nibelungen and Metropolis are sublime and majestic masterpieces that shiver me and cover me with goosebumps.

Lang is the reason why I can't call Hitchcock the greatest of all time, because so much of what Hitchcock did was just being a poor man's Lang.

I have every available region 1 Lang BD except Secret Beyond the Door, I believe, (Hangmen Also Die doesn't count, I think that's a September release). The ones that I most impatiently await are Testament of Dr. Mabuse (my second favorite film of the 30s after M), Frau im Mond, Spione, and his early films The Spiders Part I and II, an Indiana Jones-type jungle adventure.

I agree. I'm finishing up Pt II right now, and it's just as excellent as the first, if not more so. I love this film. It makes me wonder what Lang could do with today's tools and technology, considering what he was able to accomplish back then

I know that the original Italian release looked like it had a distortion problem--either the characters looked too fat or too skinny--can't remember which one.
check out the dvdbeaver review and you'll see it in the screencaps.
so I never got that bd.
am very interested to know if the Spanish bd is distortion free because if it is, I would definitely get it. great film and I always like Sylvia Sidney.
btw: it's tragic that MoC refuses to release an upgrade of the Indian Epic, seeing as how it is already restored and in their collection as a dvd.
(just hard to understand what the reason is, and for whatever reason Eureka seem to have no interest in saying why)
note: they claimed a bd was coming at one point, but obviously it has never materialized.

.
