Fritz Lang on Blu-ray

I already own like half of them.

Hopefully they release the others as individual releases, including doing 2nd prints to correct the "flawed" individual release of Spies and Woman in the Moon (which I skipped).

I guess if it comes down to it I can just sell what i have and get the set.

Nice! I've only seen Metropolis on Netflix, and I absolutely loved it. I consider it one of my favorite films. Really interested in Die Nibelungen. Definitely picking this set up since I want to watch more of Lang's films.

btw: it's tragic that MoC refuses to release an upgrade of the Indian Epic, seeing as how it is already restored and in their collection as a dvd.
(just hard to understand what the reason is, and for whatever reason Eureka seem to have no interest in saying why)
note: they claimed a bd was coming at one point, but obviously it has never materialized.

I just spoke to them about this. The simple reason is that they don't have access to a decent hi def version of the film. The only option they have is to upscale the DVD and pass it on as High-def, which nobody (including them) would want.

Hopefully one day we may see all of Lang's film in BD, but not quite yet.

Is the Indicator bluray of THE BIG HEAT better or preferable for some reason than the Twilight Time edition? is it the same transfer and mastering?

Is the Eureka bluray of DER MUDE TOD (Destiny) better or preferable for some reason than the Kino edition? is it the same transfer and mastering?

Before Kino came out with the silent films box-set I had bought most of them, and now to get the additional short films etc I'd have to duplicate part of what I already have.

I believe DVDBeaver said that The Big Heat by Indicator is THE definitive edition. Don't know if it is worth upgrading if you have twighlight version, but if you have neither then I would opt for Indicator. Even someone from Eureka recommended that version to me.. I have it, but haven't gotten around to viewing it yet.

Regarding Kino - after buying dozens of Kino titles, my opinion is - in general - Kino and silents don't mix. There is usually something wrong with their encoding, transfer, etc of silents. In fact, this it the #1 reason why I went region free - to get Lang's silents by MoC instead of Kino. That being said, I don't know if it's worth it to upgrade if you have Kino.. I just know that MoC have never screwed up a Lang transfer, and they have great packaging/booklets, etc....

I've become a Fritz Lang completest. I've been replacing all my old DVD's with the blurays as they come out, but there are competitive blurays out there. I was delighted with the first TT bluray of The Big Heat until they reprinted it with a slightly different whatever it was they did. Anyhow, I think I'll go ahead and get the Indicator.

Eureka's editions that I've seen have been impeccable.

It’s worth picking up all of MoC’s Lang releases, including the DVDs. The only one that isn’t considered the best available edition is M, where the German Universum edition is tops. However, the Universum looks to be OOP, and pricey on the secondary market.

The Indicator edition of The Big Heat is a beauty. Buy it now, before the limited edition disappears.

I've taken your advice on Indicator's bluray of The Big Heat.

I have two editions of M, the German Universum which I've been watching and the Criterion which I haven't watched yet.

The Criterion M is an inferior, older transfer. That disc is only worth saving for the extras, especially the English-language version of the film.

The Universum is still in available form Amazon Germany. The digibook is OOP and pricey, but the standard edition has the same two discs in a regular plastic case:

... actually, I believe Criterion's bluray is the same transfer only timed differently. It was upgraded from the old DVD. I have the Universum digibook.

... which is why I've kept it because one of these days I'm going to watch the extras. The English language alternate doesn't have the same gravitas but it's a Fritz Lang necessity.

I understand that M is a best-seller in every country the disc has been released. The Criterion bluray, like the old DVD transfer, has been through several reprintings. The film is immensely popular nearly 90 years after it was made.
