Yeah I feel part of it simply comes down to resolution unless it's a horrid upscale (Spice and Wolf/source sucked ass). 640x480 seriously doesn't cut it when looking at higher res screens (2K and up).

Anyway some brief Tatami Galaxy stats, episodes are about 5GB which seems a little on the low side for a mono-audio show. Audio is PCM which I think is a little bit disappointing?

The show looks good enough but I'm not enough of a videophile to properly judge.

PCM is the best audio, period. It's uncompressed, and has a rich, full sound. DTS and TrueHD are good, but PCM is my preference. But as for the resolution- it was produced in 2010, so I'm assuming it'd be 720p at least. Haven't seen the screenshots (I'm on mobile, so I can't) but I'm sure it looks fine, giving AL's track record.

EDIT: Here's a source. 1280x720. That's the source resolution.

SOURCE (in Japanese):

Also, I'm probably gonna be getting both Seven Deadly Sins and Gosick in a week or so (high school will be over for the year!) and can post screen caps.

Do I see some Japanese credits? Weird, there's some English ones as well. Normally FUNi does English only.

The screenshots shows lowpass-filtering, which means that the source is from HDCAM and not HDCAM-SR.

Isn't the difference between the two that SR is RGB and is 10-Bit encoded? Isn't HDCAM-SR the main standard?

The first ED sequence is a little different, so I guess there wasn't a textless version available. FUNi just created a text roll for that particular episode.

Looks fine to me. The only thing I hate is the lazy typesetting:

http://imgbox.com/ev6oaaaH

That's hard to read and looks horrible, unprofessional.

Compared to the fansub version:

Other than that, the dark scenes look fine. I'll wait for a complete BD set in a year or so.

Actually, the font on that fansub is totally annoying to me.

I'm well aware that a superior Japanese version of One-punch Man exists but does anyone know the picture quality of the Viz release?

That font with the green color? That was only used for that particular scene, while the rest of the show is just plain white. The point is, that it was easier to read the bottom than on Funimation's version. As to why they went with a Serif font over a Sans Serif font is because it "blends" better with the show which I have no problem with it since it's still easy to read and looks nice and not over the top like other fansubs.

It sucks that I have to stick with the fansubs a little longer until I buy the show because it's only in 720p. I would import the JP BDs, but they are actually very expensive, and I'm not that crazy about this show.

I don't think it's easier to read the bottom panel than on FUNi's version.

Oh hey, Jeffrey Kauffman reviewed the Mobile Suit Gundam movies.

I actually happened to get mine in the mail today, and from what I've seen, he's pretty much nailed the specifics of this particular release. I personally prefer how this looks compared to the TV series set.

Both the font and fill color are bad-Tahoma with a black outline and shadow and yellow for the fill color. That's nice.

There is text on top of text overlapping each other.

PCM is used on anime releases because it's completely free to use and because it is - by design - compatible with every HDTV, soundbar, DVD/Blu-Ray player or A/V setup that you can find these days. The fact that it provides great quality is just a happy coincidence.

Update on Funimation streaming audio issues

Figured this could go here since it was about quality though it is for streaming and not DVD/BD's. A group of us on the r/animedubs reddit ended up giving feedback (complaining) about Funimation's changes to the audio when the site relaunched. We were finally able to come up with something we were happy with after many months of giving feedback/being able to help test and give feedback on new test encodes.

I'll take their word on it, but I don't subscribe to FUNi- as the CR marriage has made it easier to get only one- so I can't confirm this. Well, at least they fixed it. That's better than doing nothing.
