I have a Samsung 1080i HD tv and just wondering is there really a MASSIVE difference between that and 1080p? I have 'Cars' ordered and by all accounts th PQ is out of this world! Will i be missing out??? Or is it not that much of a difference?

It's every line resolution in 1080p versus every other line in 1080i...
But in reality...it all depends on how close you are to your unit...if you are farther than 10 feet, I don't think there is a difference...larger the TV, the further away you must sit before you can't tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p etc etc...common sense stuff... |

The only way I can compare is from watching PLANET EARTH on high def dish tv in 1080i and actually watching the PLANET EARTH Blu-ray in 1080p.
Both look fantastic but the blu ray in 1080p looks extraordinary on my 46". so yeah def a big difference IMO. |

That is a little bit unfair, though. If you watched Planet Earth on a Blu-Ray player, connected to your TV via HDMI, at 1080i, it would look lots better than HD broadcast over dish, cable, or antenna.

The info transfer rate of 720p is 1280x720 x 60 Hz (about 1 megapixels, 60 times per second). For 1080i it is 1920x540 x 60 Hz (similar - about 1 megapixel, 60 times per second). 1080p is twice the transfer rate from the source to your display, 1920x1080 x 60 Hz. The main question I'd ask is whether you're comparing 1080i being displayed by a plasma/LCD/DLP that has a native resolution with 720 or 768 horizontal scan lines, or if you have a 1080i native resolution (CRT only?) In that case, 1080i to me doesn't even look as good as 720p, since it is throwing out some resolution info and trying to "make up" deinterlacing content. The bottom line is if you are considering anything HD going forward, 1080p is the only sensible choice if it is an option. |

Keep in mind that a normal TV is 480i, so going to 1080i is a gigantic improvement. 1080p is another improvement on top of that, but not nearly as drastic. |

True but don't some channels have better PQ regardless? I saw this on HDnet and HD net IMO has the best PQ of any of the other HD channels. Still maybe that was a bad comparison. Watching the Bluray on my dads 42" samsung 1080i vs my 46 1080p might be a more worthy comparison and the picture was still a lot better on my set. The 1080i just seemed softer in 1080i and he had his tv professionally calibrated. |
