Disney now owns Buffy and Angel. Not sure if this positively or negatively affects our chances of a decent HD remaster of both shows but it would
Be nice.

I would say neither. Disney's not very good with putting out TV shows.

I'd say a slight improvement. Disney's pretty good at spotting franchise potential, and keeping old franchises going. If they see these as franchise material, they may see HD remasters as a worthwhile investment. If they don't use the existing bad HD masters, they have a pretty decent record with material where the negative is 4:3 and the only way to force it to 16:9 is to chop off a quarter of the original image. Where there's room for some open-matte nonsense, though, their record gets a lot worse. Their live-action stuff hasn't been as badly DNR'd as their animated stuff, and they seem competent enough to remember to apply night filters to night shots. So I'd say the absolute rosiest best-case scenario is Seasons 1-3 in 4:3, with the rest in a consistently expanded frame that can be cropped back to 4:3 automatically by fans, moderately but not horrifically DNR'd, with more-or-less accurate colors, and original VFX.

But this show has been off the air for a long time, and would be a tricky sell to a new audience. I'm inclined to say they'll just sit on them, and stream the existing HD masters exclusively on their new streaming service. Someone has to love this series to treat it right, and increasingly I feel it's just another old property being traded around.

Heh, I dunno about the "meticulous" part when it comes to certain other remasters, I agree with the main sentiment though. But why do so many of these youtube narrators sound like they're putting their voice through a transcoder to disguise it, or even synthesizing the speech outright? So weird.

It looks like Fox outsourced this on the cheap (the very cheap), it's old news to them, they couldn't care less, & Disney isn't going to do anything. Like the guys says, hold on to your DVDs. All this reminds me, I must start looking at Angel again, I have all the DVD box sets.

That video made me really sad. I’ve known about these issues for years, and seen countless screenshots and comparisons since pivot started airing them. I started watching through the series recently, and though the first 2 seasons don’t look great, I’m really appreciating the choices they made in lighting/color/etc to make this show unique.

Hopefully it will get a good remaster at some point, alongside Angel. Just sad that of all the big 90s/00s shows, this is the one with remaster done with the least amount of care.

Honestly, huge props to everyone involved in this video, I just finished watching the whole 20mins of it. It's definitely more complete than the last one and seeing all that DVD/Remaster footage side by side really gets the point across.

I liked that all issues with this remaster were mentioned and that the "fullscreen/widescreen" agenda was not taken too far, since I've always been in favor of a proper widescreen transfer to exist alongside OAR.

To think that quite a few of us have been here since it was first announced on Pivot:
"Buffy in HD, Welcome to the new world"...
*sigh* I still watch that trailer with nostalgia and, after all, there's been nothing but disappointment since then.

Damn, the Buffy remaster truly is a tragedy. One has to wonder, surely the HD remaster means all of the original film elements were re-scanned at 2K, so theoretically those raw source files - pre-DNR - should still be available. Software now exists to recreate episodes automatically. The expense would just come from cleaning up the film of scratches and specks, etc, fine-tuning, framing for 4:3, colour correcting, and re-doing the VFX...

... I mean, at least that wouldn't be as expensive as re-scanning all the film elements again, and getting editors to re-assemble each episode manually like shows like Friends.

@samukas: Thank you, it was a lot of work, but worth it.

We definitely didn't want the video to be firmly against 16:9, since I still believe it can carefully converted. It felt more important to inform people about color-correction and DNR. Now it's out there in this one video, hopefully it will have some impact.

True in theory, but who the hell knows how the "RAW" scanned files actually look like. And if they were even kept...

Friends didn't need much re-assemble, as far as I know. I read somewhere that as soon as the episodes were edited on Video back in the day, Warner requested a conformed version to be cut on Film as well.
Not to say that there wasn't any work behind-the-scenes, but they already had a lot done. You can tell, especially in the first seasons, that all cross-fades are optically done.

Didn't know that. I believe Cheers was cut on film back in the day which made a HD remaster easy, but I didn't hear about Friends - I thought they had to consult the old editing notes. But I could be wrong

That video was really well made and also made me feel nostalgic and really sad that this show has been butchered into HD.

Ooh, well it's easy to be sure, if seasons 1-3 are still 4:3, it's not HD.

Yeah they were 4:3, but they could fulfill my dreams of presenting the early seasons in HD and the original aspect ratio!
