Default New Line Cinema/WB

If WB goes exclusive to Blu does New Line automatically follow or do they have an independent choice to make?

It's their choice, but they've stated publically they will follow WB's lead

Do you know if WB does the NL encodes, or do they "shop around" for that too?

So, even though its highly unlikely, if WB chooses HD DVD we lose 2 studios.

I don't think it would make any sense for Time Warner to let one go without the other. How would they justify fighting against themselves like that to their shareholders who buy one stock which includes both Warner and New Line? So, basically I think they go together, whichever way they go.

And just to add one thing, I personally think Lord of the Rings is more important that Star Wars to this war and that if New Line goes, they will announce it fairly soon thereafter for the format they then are siding with completely. And if New Line goes to Blu-ray before releasing some of those titles that came to Blu-ray first because of region encoding, HD DVD may never get them.

See, I don't know...New Line still has the major region coding issue. I don't think they'd be happy with having to delay everything 5 months

For that reason alone they will not be going HD-DUD exclusive.

Goes along with my thinking that this would at least put some pressure on Warner to not go that direction. Kind of like a parent telling one sister than she has to take her younger sister if she goes to the mall, so has to pick the mall that her younger sister can go to. Time Warner tells Warner that they need a very good reason to go to HD DVD as long as it doesn't have region encoding, given that wherever they go, the sister studios are going together and New Line values the ability to region encode discs.

Toshiba may end up getting screwed over by Microsoft being against region encoding support for HD DVD, all while offering a form of region encoding to studios on the XBOXLive Marketplace.

All Newline HD-DVD titles has been moved so far back could this be a sign that they & Warner are going Blu?

No, it's because HD-DVD does not have region coding and New Line cannot ( probably contractually) release these region less titles before they're ready to be released overseas.

I thought of the same thing. It can be a maneouvre, for they are not releasing those titles on HD DVD at all, and waiting for an official announcement from Time Warner.

Well, come Dec. 26th, Pan's Labyrinth is supposed to be released on Blu and HD-DVD, so, we can test that theory then.

What kind of mall would she rather be going to? Not one of those naughty malls right?

They are seperate but the same if that makes sense.

My sales rep is for WB & NL. NL can make their own decisions but they will pretty much fall in line with whatever Warner does. One decision NL made by themselves is to not release HD-DVD movies day and date like Blu-ray/DVD. Again, they are independent but with decisions as big as this one they will follow Warner everytime.

NL also abandoned the old cardboard box covers for DVD before Warner did.

Given that they are not releasing their two big day-and-dates on HD DVD due to lack of region coding, I'm highly doubtful you'll find their new releases to be region free

Son of a..... Its just LionsGate and MGS titles dont seem to be released where i am, and i cant import them cause of region coding, so was kinda hoping New Line titles whould be region free, or at least be released here like WB titles. or else i cant injoy Rush Hour 3 with DTS 7.1 or many of the other titles.

All this talk about region encoding...

Blu-ray spec has a region 0 which is open to all regions. But I think most titles are region encoded, correct me if I'm wrong. HD DVD titles are region free?

I think the main reason why studios would want region encoding as opposed to region free is to tie it into their global marketing strategy. And yes, buying media from a poorer country would be cheaper (or its supposed to be at least) and they want to prevent that, but timing their releases in different regions gives them time to advertise and market their movies.
