yeah i read that onkyo would roll out new receivers with atmos but also dropping auddessy for there own calibration . personally i think its just another feature tacked on for sales , id rather see efforts made in room calibration and stick with dtshd and dolby true .

Default Dolby Atmos Blu-ray's and decoders coming this fall!

Ladies and gentlemen! Hang on to your butts!

Dolby just announced that Atmos rendering will be unleashed onto Onkyo, Denon, Pioneer, etc. pre-amps and receivers this fall with Atmos encoded Blu-ray's to follow and with more on the way in 2015. A few current receiver and pre-amp models will be getting Atmos firmware updates.

http://www.twice.com/news/blu-raydvd...due-year/45750

No new Blu-ray player will be necessary. I'm assuming Dolby and DTS are piggybacking extension files onto traditional TrueHD and Master Audio bitstreams. Older equipment will just ignore the extra data.

Currently, there are two upper-scale consumer Atmos flavors that can also be down-converted/re-mapped to smaller theater setups:

7.1 + 4 overhead speakers or 9.1 (7.1 with 2 front wide surrounds) + 2 overhead speakers. There are 4 subwoofer outputs. Presumably 2 for the front and 2 for the surrounds via bass management. The LFE channel may be split to all 4.

Details are sketchy about the technical information. Is it truly lossless? What are the bit depth and sampling rates supported? How many total speakers can the metadata instructions control... more than 11.4... how scalable is it? How many objects are supported? Etc. Etc.

DTS cannot be far behind with their own DTS-UHD announcements.

I'm in! Big part of why I'm still using an AVR from 2006, still a little beast and was waiting on the new HDMI and Atmos to upgrade. Seems I'll be getting it faster than I originally believed.

Cool! Now I just need the extra space and spare cash and actual supported titles and a compatible receiver to make it all possible.

No new Blu-ray player will be necessary as long as it can bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio.

You just need a compatible Denon/Marantz, Onkyo, or Pioneer receiver or pre-amp or already own a model scheduled for a firmware update.

That must be a new system I've never heard of from the world of Harry Potter... Dobly Surround.

This great news for the Audio side of things!

I want to incorporate this in my home theater but after I do a complete teardown of my room so I can run wires, sound isolation etc..Maybe in a few years for me to experience Atmos in my house.

If "Dobly" was referenced in a movie, you'll have to tell me which one. I've seen too many comedies to remember them all. Or are you just covering up the fact you made a typo? LOL!

do you think theres going to be noticeable difference between atmos and true hd or dts hd at home? i think speaker layout will play key role than anything right?

Datasat (DTS) has already equipped their cinema and home processors with Auro-3D w/ at least 11.1 channel capability.

Now we just need them to release movies that support it, like the new discs SONY and Panny is working on for 4k media playback!

So far Denon is releasing there receivers with Atmos support but only up to 13.1 surround, not the complete Atmos specification "which is like 64 speakers" but not bad in itself, hopefully next year they'll releases 22.1 surround sound support then I'll bite!

That's not object surround. The DTS-UHD codec, which based off DTS MDA, is a totally different animal from Auro3D (considered to be old-school technology now that objects are taking over) and more akin to Atmos. Plus, Datasat's processor is waaaaaaaaaay outside the price range of most mere mortals.

Though, statistically there are more movies being mixed in object surround (like Atmos) than there were when Dolby Digital first came on the scene in the early 1990's.

The technology's implementation is growing faster in the industry than any other previous audio format, and it may get bigger still now that consumers can get a taste of it.
