Default HELP!! What do I keep? Sony BDP-S350 or BDP-BX1?

Hello,

Well I have both the BDP-S350 and the BDP-BX1. Both still new in the box... Will someone please explain in detail for a novice the difference between the two, wich one I should keep? I understand that the BX1 is a Costco model number and that it comes with a HDMI cable and a backlit remote. But is there any other difference than that? The price difference was $10.00 between the two so it doesnt really matter cash wise, but obviously I would like the better machine. Thanks for your help guys...

Dave.

If you really want the better machine then return them both and get a Panasonic DMP-BD35K. I have a bad history with Sony products and wouldn't recommend anything from them.

I have the S350 and love it. I think the only thing you are missing with the BDP-BX1 is onboard TrueHD decoding, while it still bitstreams. You gain a backlit remote and a HDMI cable with it though.

Both models are nearly identical. Keep the one that suits you better.
The S350 is currently the best bang for your buck if you are not a gamer. Despite what other people have said, I have NEVER had any problem with ANY Sony product.

I already have a PS3 in my bedroom, with a Vizio 47 inch TV. The new Blueray player is for the living room. If the backlit remote works with the S350, I might have to accidently switch the two before I return the BX1. HHHmmmm.... Any thoughts? So my understanding is that the S350 is the better machine but the BX1 comes with the cable and the HDMI... correct?

The only REAL difference between the two players is that the S350 has onboard decoding of Dolby TrueHD sound. The BX-1 just does bitstreaming of that to your AV receiver. Both of them only bitstream DTS HD-MA to your receiver.

I guess with the DDTHD onboard decoding you could say its the better player, but I personally would have to choose the one that costed less if your receiver can decode the audio anyways.

As was stated before, I would still rather have the Panasonic 35K, it is getting slightly better reviews cause of the better upscaling and PQ. But honestly, I can't imagine the PQ being so different it would be noticable. Upscaling, I could see there being a noticeable difference. I have a lot of DVDs so I wanted the better upscaling.

But Sony does make great quality products, don't get me wrong.

Oh well i have a S350 is it's working fabulously well... In canada price difference off 100$ wasn't worth it for Panasonic Canada Big Ego (don't need the decoding , have a receiver). They sell the AE3000 projector 3299$ in Canada and 2499.99$ in the US LOL! It,s the SAmE MACHINE!

Well guys thanks for all the input! I am returning the BX1 and keeping the s350. The remote that came with the BX1 sure looks cool with a bright blue back light. Anyways just wanted to say thanks for the posts...

Default BDX1 purchase

Actually I had a raincheck from Kmart for Black Friday (they didn't even have any in stock for that day believe it or not) for the BDP-S350 priced at $179!, so I finally was called today (complained to Sears Holdings Co. about lack of stock - what a coincidence, huh?) to say they had the players in stock, so I get to the store and they bring out the BDP-BX1. I said "um.. this isn't what was advertised..." and they told me that all stores ran out and that they will now be stocking the BDX1 which is essentially the same save the onboard TrueHD decoding, but I think I can live with that for now... So if that is really the only difference that is fine with me - especially since not only did I get the raincheck price but to my surprise they took an additional in-store rebate of $30 to make it come out to $149! I think that is an even trade-off for not getting that onboard TrueHD decoding, but including the back-lit remote and HDMI cable as well, no?

Default Rebate?

The same exact thing happened to me at Kmart, but I didnít get a rebate. I donít know if the guy was confused on entering the rain check or if he didnít know about the rebate. How did you get the rebate and was it only good for last week? I went there Saturday to get the player but it was locked in a cage in the stockroom and there was no key available until Monday to open it.

I'm tired of listening to people on this forum saying that the Panny BD35 is better machine than Sony S350.....Look: I had both the BD35 and S350 at the same time for about two weeks and to me their performance is pretty equal. I liked the upconvesrsion in the S350 better despite what some reviews says. I think it all comes down to personal taste.....during the time I had both machines, I encountered some problems on the BD35. It froze one time while I was watching The Butterfly Effect on SD DVD and it wouldn't resume playback on License to Drive SD DVD. They both played fine on the S350. Aso, the Panny runs very, very hot. Within 10 minutes of playback, the glass on my entertainment system was very hot I lifted the unit and touch it underneath and it was very, very hot. The Sony does not run hot.

I think both units are wonderful but I liked better the Sony. I think the Panny is a bit overhyped......

If you like audio then the Panny is better, but PQ between the both of them are the same it comes down to Audio Quality. I have the PS3 and that's the flagship for Sony Blu-ray players. The AQ isn't as good as the Panny. I hope you have a good subwoofer to understand that.

Correction, it's the flagship period..

On a serious note does anyone have a part # for the BDP-BX1 remote. My .02 would be to stick with the BDP-BX1 and sell the 350.

I have the 350 and so far it is a great br/dvd player.
I got it for $200 at BB on Black Friday on an unadvertised special...they had a dozen sitting on the floor with a hand made sign attached lol. No one was even looking at them lol.
I would like to run the audio/video signal to my tv from the dvd through the receiver via hdmi but my receiver does not have hdmi. The sound is still quite good so until I bother to replace the receiver I am quite happy.

PS3 is NOTTTT the Flagship Sony BD player-it is their biggest seller and the s550 and s5000es have better pq and audio capabilities than the PS3---Flagship, PS3,not!!

I too got my BX1 player at Kmart with raincheck, however, was unaware of additional $30 rebate. Was $30 rebate from Sony or Kmart and can I still get it as I still have yet to open box. I phoned Kmart today and now tell me that they only hae BDP-S350 model for $299.99, go figure. any ideas?

Any flagship should have onboard decoding for all HD-Audio with 7.1 analog outs to say the least.
