You guys have probably already seen this or it was posted somewhere else I didn't notice. But just in case, here are the original English dub voice actors of Evangelion who played Shinji and Asuka doing an AIDS PSA in the 90's.

But I actually would prefer Funimation to acquire the license because we’ll actually see the movie get a physical release this decade. |

FUNimation will still do theatrical releases if they license movies. However, anime movies have gone under a strange trend this past decade, many you'd expect to get licensed simply don't get licensed, and if they do, they end up in the hands of who you'd least expect. Promare, Mirai (a Momoru Hosoda film, didn't FUNi LOVE his stuff?), Perfect Blue, and Tokyo Godfathers with GKIDS? Millennium Actress, Laughing Under the Clouds Gaiden, A Silent Voice, and Sound! Euphonium: Our Promise with Eleven Arts?
Some movies that have been outright skipped this past decade: Mushishi Zoku Shou: Suzu no Shizuku, Star Driver: The Movie, Psycho-Pass: Sinners of the System Case (and then the rest of the franchise ends up with Amazon rather than FUNimation....), Heaven's Lost Property: Final, Girls und Panzer das Finale, Date A Live: Mayuri Judgement, Sound! Euphonium compilation movies, Full Metal Panic! compilation movies. Others took an unusually long time to get licensed. Ex: Tamako Love Story, Chu2koi Rikka Version, Space Brothers #0, Free! movies (timing on these was bad as some are needed to understand Dive to the Future (S3), mainly High Speed! and Take Your Marks, FUNi's movie box set came out months after Dive to the Future aired). |

You're right, big Shonen movies still get theatrical releases like MHA, One Piece, and Dragon Ball from Funimation, but I still greatly prefer GKids distribution. In my area at least, GKids showings were much more widely available thanks to their strong connections with AMC and their showings were also a lot more fun since they would usually have bonus interviews with the production team, early fan screenings, and sometimes even posters and goodies with the tickets, their Blu-rays also follow pretty quickly after the JP release. (Promare was released 2/4 in Japan, 5/17 in the US)
Funimation loves to slap their logo on everything and change all the credits for their titles and after the fiacso with 3.0 I can't imagine Studio Khara wanting to work with them again. But also something I think to keep in mind that Funimation released the Violet Evergarden film in theaters while Netflix released it on their platform a few weeks later. But none of this matters now anyway since we won't be going to theaters anytime soon in the US and I don't know how 3.0 + 1.0 makes its June 27 release in Japan either ![]() |

Sentai and Funimation (possibly) both ruled out. I'm sticking with Viz as my guess. They've been releasing Netflix titles like Castlevania and Blame!, there's some sort of partnership between the two. Viz no longer has to worry about Sailor Moon so they've probably got some extra money laying around to shell out for Eva.

Has the Sailor Moon thing been confirmed yet? I figure if that were the case, Viz's stockpile would have sold like hotcakes (not unlike Fullmetal Alchemist) by now. Last edited by gloomranger; 04-16-2020 at 01:52 AM. |

Chances of Viz coming out and admitting that they've lost the rights are slim to none. Especially because this is Viz we're talking about. We got no communication when Bleach Blu-rays went on a year and a half hiatus and InuYasha went a year without getting a release date.

VIZ to my knowledge has never given an advanced notice of something going OOP. It's only after the license has expired they'll say anything, if at all. It should be standard as it benefits everyone, the NA and JP companies make more money, and the fans don't miss out, it's a win-win, yet historically most shows go OOP without advanced notice.

I hope there’s a chance of FUNi getting the final Rebuild movie, if anything so we can have a theatrical release, and so the dub can bring back the original English cast. There’s a few decent voices in the Netflix redub (Casey Mongillo as Shinji, Ray Chase as Gendo), but I’ll always consider the original cast the true English voices, even if the original ADV TV series dub hasn’t aged the best; I think the cast really shined in the Rebuild films (the original Death/Rebirth and End of Eva dubs were solid too IMO).
I also think there’s the chance the original series/films will make it onto Blu-ray here. Netflix doesn’t own the show. They just have the streaming license. Plenty of other Netflix anime are on physical media from other companies. I think it’s possible it might even come from FUNimation because I’m not convinced that their relationship with Khara is completely soured. In any case, I was able to pick up ADV’s platinum holiday collection at 2nd & Charles for $2.78 with store credit, and I found the original two movies on DVD new and sealed for about $12 each on eBay (although the quality of those discs is atrocious), so at least I own the whole franchise on physical media in some form. |

I think it's going to be some time before we see that though. Netflix wants their "Originals" to be exclusive and you can't do that with physical media releases. Only time will tell...

How long did Netflix have Parasyte The Maxim and Knights of Sidonia before Sentai released their physical BD counterparts?
