The Blu-rays are the same transfer, but are still a massive upgrade from the DVDs, and one of the best looking 16mm HD animation transfers I’ve seen. They’re sharper, faithfully filmic, and their colors pop. If you’re after the original dub, the movies look infinitely better than the old barely-watchable Manga Entertainment DVDs.

Here's a few comparisons of the Japanese Blu-ray vs. the Platinum DVDs and the Manga Entertainment DVDs.
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...0#post11292930 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...2#post11303092 https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...9#post11306449 It's worth noting the GKIDS Blu-ray looks even better than the Japanese Blu-ray (it's uncommon for an English release to be superior to the Japanese one), so it's even more of an upgrade. The only reason to hang onto the DVDs is if you care about Fly Me to the Moon and the various video extras as the ones ADV Films and Manga Entertainment made did not make it to the GKIDS release. |

Thanks for the heads-up on the region coding for the UK 11-disc set. I probably won't ever pick it up since I'm good with having Discs 1-6, but if a listing ever comes up on eBay for super cheap maybe I'd take the plunge.

I say keep the platinums for the FLY/FRY Me To The Moon and ADV dub, but DO get the standard Gkids set for End of Evangelion. If you look around, there are many places that sell the standard GKids set for a cheaper price.

It has been explained a million times already. It's a matter of COST. It's not "illegal" to use it or cover it; it's prohibitively expensive for an anime release.

Yeah, it was in Squid Game too. But it's a lot cheaper to license it once then license it the 30 odd times needed for Eva. Same reason the opening only plays once in Eden of the East.

If they didn’t want to spend too much for the song, they could just keep it for the two episodes and movie it played as part of the score (Episodes 15 and 21, and also Death. They would preserve the original creative vision, but they would spend considerably less than paying for the song at least 27 times (and maybe more for the bonuses). If I were part of Khara. That’s what I will do, to pay a ninth or less than preserving the song all the way throughout. While preserving the original direction. And it would be much easier for purists to just splice in the original Fly Me to the Moon credits each episode from the JP BD, than having to also restore it to the actual BGM. Lastly, I noticed the Rei I international ending theme plays slightly differently each episode. That’s honestly a really nice touch. Last edited by Hydra Spectre; 02-19-2023 at 07:53 AM. |
