Agree strongly on both.

I've never heard the original dub myself, but I do know how cringe-worthy a lot of dubs can be due to over-acting or bad Japanese writing that carries over. I tried watching Gurren Lagann earlier today and the dub was grating to me. I don't think that the Japanese would have probably been any better, but things always sound worse when you actually understand the language and process it like you would if you were just listening to a convo.

Trust me, as a Japanese and English speaker, such a judgement is incorrect.
Eva was the only series I ever had complete on VHS and saw in the early days of my fandom, so to me the dub is the only way I watch Eva. I've watched a bit in japanese and it just doesnt work for me.

I guess I'm lucky in that my first experience was with those crappy 50mb/episode RealVideo encodes with English subtitles back in the late 90s. At least I'm not invested in grainy low-res 320p video while watching Evangelion like some people are with its equally atrocious dub.

I’m actually curious to hear the new dub. I liked the old one, but dubbing has come a long way since the 90’s and it doesn’t seem like something Netflix would skimp on as far as time and effort.

But obviously in an ideal world they’d keep the old dub as an option at least.

Let Netflix keep their new dub exclusive on Netflix. Give me everything else on disc =)

Having both dubs would be cool, similar to what RightStuf will be doing for Gundam SEED/Destiny.

If they want to redub it, fine, but don't try to erase history like what FUNimation nearly did with Escaflowne. The old dub for that almost ended up being CE-exclusive. Sadly it looks like the old dub will forever be stuck on the ADV DVDs. I don't sell stuff to begin with, but even if I did, I have more reasons to hang onto my Platinum thinpak and Holiday Edition. And looks like the other releases I want are going to remain a bit pricey due to the series being OOP, those being the Platinum singles + artbox (with their beautiful booklets and slipcovers) and the tin set.

Netflix getting the series has really made any excitement I could have had go away entirely, similar to what happens when FUNimation or Amazon get anything I really care about. We might never get an English Blu-ray release, the old dub is being erased from history, and the ADV DVD extras aren't going to appear on the Blu-ray release if we get it at all.

Yeah my Platinum Edition Tin Thinpack isn’t going anywhere anytime in the near future.

I guess I'm lucky that I don't stress about if I'm watching something in the most "optimal" way possible. That sounds like a lot less fun than just enjoying it.

Enjoyment is better when you watch stuff under optimal circumstances, obviously. That's why people buy Blu-ray and some people buy expensive displays and have them professionally calibrated.

I'm fine w/ losing the old dub. It's not priority anymore. It'd be cool to have for historical posterity but a new dub is even better if they fix what went wrong before. The dub was made in a time where the industry did certain things that don't age well.

It'd be cool if the new dub they actually got kids to do it.

Saying all that, I would prefer they keep the old cast for the 4th movie. Even knowing it's a different thing separate from Netflix working on the property.

As a collector if they ever did an ultimate edition (TVD&R,EOE/Rebuild) I would love everything from both US and Japanese releases LaserDisc, VHS, DVD and BD including Netflix's dub. For the life of me I can't fathom why the Archives of Evangelion DVD release was different from the BD release of Evangelion.

Because its a release of the TV broadcast, and not the future extended versions released on home video?

I mean the DVD and the BD should have been the same release on both formats. Of course being OCD and them not doing that I had to get both.

Exactly. Before the "Archives of Evangelion" set, the only episodes whose broadcast versions had been released on home video were 21-24, and even then they were limited to either a mail-in redemption with all 14 proofs-of-purchase of the original VHS/LD singles or the very limited "Second Impact Box" DVDs from 2001.

The 2003 DVD Box Set pretty much mirrors the BD content wise.

I always find myself wondering how much of the general NGE hype is due to nostalgia. It's a good show. I enjoy it a lot too. But similar to many of the things I like, they can also be massively overrated at the same time. "Good" and "overrated" are not mutually exclusive and I think NGE easily falls into the overrated category. At this point, for the last ten years, people want this so badly partly because they can't have it. If the show had been available on disc in HD for the last decade I wonder how much conversation it would continue generating. My guess is that it would simply be another evergreen property.

I've been waiting for these BD discs for ages too. But it's not something that haunts me. I've purposely been avoiding a rewatch until the BDs come out, but it looks like I'll finally give it a go on Netflix later this summer.
