It felt very much like Lupin Part V in execution - still very much a product of it's time (the 80's/the 70's, respectively), still true to the spirit of the series, but still modern.

Will buy for sure. Get on that Discotek!

CH '91

Picture: Excellent
Sound: Good
Subtitles: No problems
Extras: Commercials (jpn), Clean OP/END

Notes: For those who have never seen this season,
episodes 6 and 9 have epilogue scenes after the ending song but before the next episode preview.

Content. This season was better IMO than CH3, but not as good as Season 1 or 2.
Too few episodes and the final episode is a standard story but with a twist at the end which is never followed up in the various movies/OVAs that follow CH 91.

In fact, I'd even say that the Ep 8/9 two part "Sonia Field" story functions much better as a season finale, maybe even a series finale if I'm being generous.
(Its nice to see Miki be more than window dressing in a CH story)

Saeko is featured in about half the episodes, but only gets one spotlight episode. Nice idea, but it feels like a little to late.
Reika had a blink and you miss it cameo in S3, but doesnt even appear in this season.
Her debut in S1 was pretty good and she had some good moments in S2 here and there
Another case of diminishing returns.

I know no one watches CH for the villains, but I think the last 2 seasons have been lacking.
Ryo going through henchman and most villains in 1 hit/shot is fine, but occasionally you need some enemies that give Ryo a slight challenge.

IE: The General, Michael Gallant, Lodoss Mafia 3 siblings, Silver Fox, Robert Harrison (S1-2)

There are 2 duels with 2 powerful characters, but the story sort of reduces the impact of those towards the end.

Notable Stories:

Ep 5/6 "Ghost Sisters" 2 parter
Ep 8/9 "Sonia Field" 2-parter
Ep 7 - Hayato Ijuin's Extremely Peaceful Day - the funniest story this season imo
Ep 10 - Cinderella

Overall: 7/10

TRSI had a Spys and Private Eyes sale last week, with all the new City Hunters (and the steelbook of Angel Cop) listed for a pretty good price. I might have been able to save a touch more during one of the comprehensive discoteck sales, but this is fine enough.

They should be here in a day or two.

I don't know how well rebundling the season 1 releases into one set performed for Discotek. I would love it if they released a mega set with the whole classic series and movies. But even if that doesn't happen (which I imagine is unlikely considering Discotek don't usually put out sets that big), it would be nice to get season 2 rebundled into one set.

I’d expect early 2023 for a complete collection of Season 2. Probably a February or March release.

Seems at least likely since they did it with the first season.

I hope they do it for season 2 as well even as someone that bought the split release. I don't care if the old releases are "devalued" as that isn't why I bought them. I had already re-watched season 1 entirely through the bluray by the time the full season release was out. I'll be taking the shrink off season 2 part 2 soon.

Yeah, i wonder how much s2's sales were hurt by people holding off on a complete s2 set. I know i haven't ordered s2 even though i want all the City Hunter releases simply as I'd prefer a complete release over a split release.

It's weird to see this thread active with posts not by me lol.

Anyhoo, does anyone have any info on that new theatrical film? There was a 30 seconds teaser circa April, but I believe no other news since then.

Thanks.

While there was nothing wrong with buying either set really, I agree the move sucks. It created confusion to the buyers and fans. Confusion makes us not buy the product. Not good for sales. I hope Discotek never pulls this off (a complete set released a year later) with any other series they chose to divide into individual sets in the future.

Key point bolded, there's nothing wrong with putting out complete sets but the way this one was released so soon was.

Funimation used to do this a lot and it had people waiting for the re-releases instead, especially during the years of the much cheaper S.A.V.E. sets they were putting out.

Asked about this. If you want Season 2, I would buy season 2. Repackaging S1 was a bit of an experiment for a reprinting, S2's fate has not yet been determined as of yet.

I bought season 2 in the parts and would gladly buy a complete collection. I did that with season 1. It'll look better lined upped with the others, especially with season 2 parts not being curved slipcovers.

I admit I'd probably long have bought season 2 already had season 1 not received a complete set. As things were I wasn't sure whether to wait or get these to match my two sets of season 1.

Now that Justin has leaned in I think I'll just go with the existing two packs season 2.

I'd add a vote towards not having re-packaged releases if possible, but I also favor complete sets like Discotek did with Orange Road. Maybe when possible please favor complete sets, but when not, please don't release one later down the road. It's not a great feeling for early adopters.

I wouldn't go back and buy a series again just to get a more compact package that bundles the whole series together. But if a series I was interested in got bundled as a whole, I would go for that complete set over individual releases, even if there was little to no economic savings.

Like if they put all the 'Project A-ko' films in one compact set, I would totally be in for that because I haven't got around to buying them yet. If they put all four films on one UHD disc but at regular HD quality, like how they put SD on BD to minimize discs, I would go for that too.

Guess I'm an odd one out - I only bought Season 1 after it was released as a complete set and had no intention of buying it otherwise. A complete set at a good price for that many episodes was enough to push me into it.

Discotek are over here doing the lord’s work by releasing stuff none of the other licensing companies would touch in a million years… and yet, some of you are hung up on whether a niche title should come in parts or a whole.
