Very unlikely it's a new transfer. The Yu Yu Hakusho 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray features the same bad and nearly unreadable subtitle font they used before late 2012. If they're not going to tweak the subtitle font, what makes you think they'll do a new transfer which is much more work?

Hell no! Why would they? All they have to do is offer a new box and the sets go OOP before the release date. Crunchyroll don’t care about quality. All they want is easy money and the folks who pre-order these box sets are giving it to them.

Again, expect these to come back under Crunchyroll skus. Senran Kagura was a super recent release. Doesn't make any sense to stop printing it, especially since Sony is much better now with managing inventory using MOD.

Only the following have been re-released under Crunchyroll:
-Cowboy Bebop -Dragon Ball GT -Dragon Ball Super -My Hero Academia S5 Part 1 (Reprinted with CR logo and no FUNimation Digital Copy) -Yu Yu Hakusho (OOP) It doesn't look like they're going to be re-releasing everything with new SKUs, especially with many of these older titles not selling that much anymore. We were already seeing stuff go OOP before it was announced FUNimation was going to buy Crunchyroll. Also the Code Geass movies and the Cowboy Bebop movie say hi. I would rather be safe than sorry, especially with how much lower print runs are these days. Crunchyroll's slates have been smaller than when it was FUNimation. This most recent slate, the only brand new title is Aoashi, and they're continuing to release the new Legend of the Galactic Heroes series. Many titles are looking like they'll stay stuck streaming-only. |

There's a ceiling for streaming subscriptions. It won't always continue to grow indefinitely. Increasing prices and risk losing subscribers isn't a full-proof strategy.
I can see OOP titles being brought back on Blu-ray after a few years; build up demand and new potential buyers. And that's assuming another company like Sentai or Discotek doesn't acquire home video rights if they're available. |

So far, three of the CR reissues have been collectors editions (DBS, YYH, and Bebop), with MHA and DBGT being the only standard reissues. I think it’s too early to tell what their overall plans are. Surely those collectors editions won’t be the only ones made available for those best-selling evergreen titles.

To piggyback on this most (not all) of the Essentials titles have come back in stock at RS. I didn't think I would be getting Sankarea as its an older title with multiple releases and was OOS the longest but they just restocked it and its the same old Funi disc and packaging.

I wouldn’t say “forever” as a definitive term, but it could potentially be a long wait. It ultimately depends on what exactly Crunchyroll’s end game is. Will smaller more niche titles be relegated to streaming if they don’t hit a certain quota? Are Crunchyroll slowly trying to phase out of releasing home video to force fans into making their app more profitable? It’s kind of a waiting game to see what happens.

Unfortunately younger anime fans have been born into a world of convenient streaming with "low" monthly/annual fees (or worse they just pirate).
They are the main target audience from what I've seen, don't see them caring about owning or re-watching again until it's too late (when they're much older). Which dominos over and affects us older fans negatively, since Crunchyroll sees less reason to release anime on home media. That's just my own opinion on the matter though, hope I'm proven wrong in the long run. |
