Pretty stupid business decision on Funimation's part to think that the number of people in group A doing something should determine what people in group B are going to do, since they're not necessarily the same group of people.

Surveys FUNimation conducted kept showing that most people had seen some or all of a show before they bought it. Blind-buyers were the minority. Streaming numbers have proven to be useful to companies.

I feel like almost everything gets re-liscence at somepoint. I seen movies that I thought would never get re-release again, but they did like with Combat Shock. Not an anime, but you see what I mean. That's why I'm hoping Discotek will get the Gatchman stuff in the near future.

I almost never blind buy with a few exceptions. I've wasted far too much money doing that in the past. As you said with streaming most people will not blind buying series on physical. It's more likely collectors items or for fans of the series already. The few exceptions would be for studios I really trust or like. I blind bought Nichijou just because it's kyoani and I really like all the comedy series they've done.

In the meantime, there's still plenty of anime on physical media to buy out there.
Look I don't want to be a dick here, but you a very small vocal minority in this. If you weren't they would have that data or sales that tell them to keep doing it. The people who buy physical and have no access to streaming is prob like 1% or less of the anime audience.

Definitely not everything, I've been waiting for over 10 years for someone to rescue Sola and release it on Blu-ray. Even Sentai Filmworks which accidentally was able to license it while Bandai's was still active still hasn't gone after it.

There's many other titles I own that never got license rescued. Where's my Agent AIKa and Najica Blitz Tactics, Discotek Media?

Always think of the 90s version of Berserk. A bluray release practically everywhere except North America. Nothing is guaranteed unfortunately.

A great deal of Aniplex’s titles would beg to differ. Angel Beats, Baccano, Birdy the Mighty: Decode, Blood+, Darker than Black, Fullmetal Alchemist, Hell Girl, Paradise Kiss, Read or Die, Toward the Terra and Xam'd: Lost Memories to name just a few. Not one of these shows is currently available for streaming either.

Thankfully I've got all of those titles on physical disc except Hell Girl, Paradise Kiss, and Xam'd, which were three titles I decided to pass on. I definitely try to keep up to date as possible with any Aniplex titles I'm interested in, whether put out by AoA or Funimation, just for the reason that they almost never re-release. Oh, and I'm also good with both MVM releases of Berserk '97 on Blu-ray, too - Collector's Edition and steelbook.

Angel Beats is actually available for streaming on both Funimation and Crunchyroll. Unfortunately all the rest are still unavailable until Aniplex starts allowing older titles to be license-rescued (I doubt CR is interested in re-releasing any of these titles even though both Aniplex and CR are currently owned by Sony).

The problem I could see with Crunchyroll is if they just keep relicensing things just for streaming content never upgrading the stream source and then never giving them another physical release either.

A lot of the titles Funimation originally got from Geneon or the Sojitz mess that I would love Discotek or someone else to have. Most because they are in dire need of a better release then Funimation ever gave them and the streaming plus physical release looks like crap for so many . So far they have let go of so few of them.

We can't even get a legal streaming method for the series. Netflix gets the rights and NA is still SOL on it.

If only 1% of the anime audience buys their titles, Sentai, RightStuf and every other company that sells or makes anime discs wouldn't be in business.

And I have access to streaming. I just don't care to. I refuse to be tied to some corporation's desire to get me hooked on some kind of service forever just in case I want to see a certain show again sometime, and even THEN take the risk they won't be streaming it anymore.

No thanks. I've got a nice collection and don't need them.

The lack of (or long delayed) releases from CR, Netflix and Amazon just have me worried they will just keep only physically rereleasing the big titles like DBZ and ignore everything else. I mean anyone here ever heard of Muromi-san? It's a nice little comedy from 2013, licensed and streamed by CR but obviously will never get a physical release. It's not the only one either. Discotek luckily puts out a few like As Ms Beelzebub Likes It, which I never thought would get a release, but they are too small and busy to do more than a few a year, even their limited release experiment with stuff like Aho Girl don't seem to be worth their while as they haven't even sold out such a limited run.

Re: Nichijou, the reason why that is unavailable for further order is more than likely due to the need for the new Crunchyroll sku. This is probably the case for most of the Funi titles being delayed. It can take a while to get new skus, especially if they're talking about re-skuing a lot of prior releases.

Again, always be better safe than sorry, especially now. When a modern anime release goes OOP, it can end up being much harder to track down because the print runs are typically lower than that of the 2000s anime DVD bubble because companies learned valuable lessons from that, especially because it completely tanked one company (*Cough*Geneon, the absolute king of overprinting*Cough*). In the 2000s anime DVD bubble, LEs could be limited to 10,000-15,000 units, now when we get numbers, it's like 2,500-7,500. Also of note...https://twitter.com/LandofObscusion/...18432868327425

If you want a title, buy it. There's no guarantees of what will and what won't get re-released. Anyone that thought for example "Oh, the Code Geass movies will get re-released in a standard Blu-ray case for cheap later." is currently still waiting and puzzled why something so popular has been OOP for years and hasn't been re-released.

FUNimation has quite literally HUNDREDS of titles, and Crunchyroll had a bunch distributed under them, and they're now under the same umbrella. How many of those will be worth re-releasing under the Crunchyroll branding? How many of those still have any staying power? How fast can they even re-release those? Grab what you want while you can so you don't regret it later. This goes for every company. We've seen many Discotek Media titles go OOP recently that aren't going to be reprinted. Maiden Japan titles have been similar, especially as it seems they've been absorbed into Sentai (Reminder: They were legally a separate independent company owned by Matt Greenfield and associated with his Switchblade Pictures company. Source), and we've seen only one go from Maiden Japan to Sentai, that being the Gunbuster movie.
When I started reading this post I was thinking I wonder if he will mention Discotek. Their highly limited releases still being available backs up what they said previously about low sellers being in the 1,000 copies range. Anything with those kind of print numbers would be an absolute pain to track down after it goes out of print. To the point where it can be basically impossible.

Often yes but it can take many years and of course there are exceptions. I more or less never pay crazy after market prices for stuff but I pounce when stuff is in print. Sometimes things are announced for a rescue and the release never materializes as well unfortunately.

PUCHIM@S S1 DVD I noticed has been completely delisted from RightStuf, and S2 is now listed as "Out of Stock" shortly after I ordered it. Both seasons are still available at the Crunchyroll Store. I highly doubt this will get re-released given it went to sub-only DVD, couldn't even get a Blu-ray release.

Crunchyroll most likely has only streaming rights to Muromi-san, not home video. Crunchyroll did sometimes get home video bundled with streaming, but they did not begin to care about home video rights until 2016.

I would hope that Crunchyroll will still be willing to either let smaller companies like Discotek release their shows for them (like with KonoSuba, Planet With, and I believe Symphogear), or, since they've bought RightStuf, just use Nozomi Entertainment for their "less popular" content. No idea if either of those would feasibly happen, though, and the things almost everyone has said here so far leads me to believe it won't.

That was fast, ordered it as soon as I saw it on sale at RS as by then Amazon had already sold out.

(Still at the CR store, see coupons below)
