Default Dragon Ball Z on Blu-ray

As you may know, The History of Trunks/Bardock: Father of Goku double feature comes out on Blu-ray tomorrow. The next movie coming out will be the Tree of Might/Lord Slug double feature which comes out September 16, 2008. It's already available for pre-order at the ZStore (and they usually ship items early) and at BestBuy.com. Best Buy, however, made a little mistake. They're displaying the cover of the Cooler's Revenge/Return of Cooler double feature instead of the correct one.

I would send a message but i dont have an answer so ill tell everyone, Funimation is seeing how popular the movies are on Blu-ray and plan on releasing the seasons on Blu-ray, but they are wondering if people would pay a lot more for a remastered animated series from the 80's. I personally love the show, but if they are listing the seasons at $50 or more, i dont think they wont fly off shelves, they most likely finish the rest of the movies and then do a focus group to determine if seasons on Blu is the best route because there a lot of seasons. They will either do all or none (as of now). They want to see what is the best thing to do financially as well as quality.

Hope this helps

I guess this one could take a while, they are in the middle of doing the seasons on DVD and I dont know if it would be very good for their sales if they even announced it.

Though, I'd probably get this, since the DVD remastered versions are pretty bad (cropping and the colors).
Lets hope we get some word on this soon, but my guess is that they are gonna use as much time as they can releasing those movies first

If/when this makes it's way onto BD, I'm confident it will be cropped just the same as the DVDs.

But even so, it'll still be the best you'll be seeing the show any time soon. Maybe if Toei does a Japanese release, they'll have original aspect ratio, but I really wouldn't expect such a thing any time soon, and if they did, it'd probably cost a bloody fortune to import.

The only thing I don't understand about cropping is why they force it upon the consumer. They could do it as is and let the TV set do the cropping to fit 16:9. I mean, they don't even seem to be doing any sort of "tilt"-and-scan on it, so from time to time, the cropping becomes very distracting in having heads cut off and things like that.

To be entirely honest though, the animation quality on this thing is pretty low. I'd love to see them do a new adaptation of the manga. If you saw the new OVA they put out, I think you'd agree that Dragon Ball can look freaking amazing with higher quality animation and 16:9 native aspect ratio.

ps they're not "in the middle" of releasing the DVD sets-- they're almost done. I think just 1 or 2 more of DBZ, then 1 of DBGT. Then sometime in the future, Funimation will be putting out sets of the original Dragon Ball.

Yup, because if you have any of the movies on Blu-ray, they're all cropped (that's how they were intentionally released in Japan when they were in theatres).

All they have left to do is The Majin Buu Saga, The Fusion Saga, and The Kid Buu Saga for DBZ. Each one will most likely have its own season too since they're so long.

I already own all the DVD's except for the ones that were dubbed by the Ocean group. So that forced me to buy the newer seasons just so I could complete my collection and now I have to finish collecting this set. And when they come out on Blu, I don't know if I'll get them. If they're not cropped, I'll definitely get the set on Blu.

I wouldn't use the word "cropped" to describe the feature length material. Subtle hints are there to tell you that it was intended to be seen in a widescreen format. For example, look at the opening sequence on the series DVDs in the early episodes and compare it to the opening sequence used in the early films. The clearest point is at the end of it where it shows Goku, Tien, Yamcha, Master Roshi, and Chiaotzu I think. In the DVD episodes, Master Roshi's head is chopped off, on the movies, it is not.

If I had to guess, I'd think the movies were designed for 1.85:1, and Funimation either cropped a tiny bit off the sides to make 16:9 or expanded vertically a tiny bit.

I was just estimating how many were left based on the overall spine graphic on the existing sets. The Buu episodes are the ones I am least familiar with since I missed most of them when they aired.

Ocean group one sucks, man. The voices are so cartoony and terrible. I mean, Funimation's isn't a whole lot better, but jeez. Either way, the original Japanese voice actors probably do the best job in terms of straight acting.

And yeah, I think I'll probably only get a BD set if they're not cropped. I wouldn't mind them opening up the frame a little (they did say there was additional footage animated on the periphery that never fit into the original 1.33:1 display), but I don't want them cropping just to fit it into a 1.78:1 screen. I just hope that when they transferred from the masters that they grabbed the ENTIRE image and saved that, because if they only recorded the 16:9 frame that we've seen on the DVD sets, that would be very stupid.

Apparently there's a tidbit of tentative news I found today.
http://www.fanboyreview.net/2009/01/...nd-bandai-5cm/

"Dragonball Z TV Blu-rays are being worked on (or at least in the higher side of planning stages, I’m not 100% sure on that). Beyond that, I know nothing (minus a hint of maybe a pack in exclusive at Best Buy, but not sure about that)."

What's the point of HD DBZ? There is not a lot of detail, and more than anything it would just reveal imperfections in the film.
On the other hand DBZ is my favorite...

There's an OVA DBZ out? I got to see that!!

I still have not seen the Majin Buu saga or DBGT. I haven't had TV since the Saiyaman saga.

DBGT is crap. Akira Toriyama had nothing to do with it. DBZ was inspired by his original manga, but when he retired they wanted to keep making money so they made up some random Dragon Ball stuff.
If you are familiar with the concept of a "filler" where they create random episodes of a show that aren't based on anything to kill time/airspace, you could think of DBGT as one giant filler.

I would love these on Blu-ray, I just hope that they include at least a 5.1 remastered Japanese audio instead of a 2.0...

I was kind of dissapointed on this one. Yes it was great to see DBZ once again with upgraded art, but the fights and new baddie was def a disappointment. I know they were attempting to show eveyone once again and give fan service to everyone, but they could have done so much more (especially the new baddie)
