I got the Momo DVD at Target, maybe the Poppy Hill DVD as well, but I can't remember if I bought Kaguya there... I know I got the other GKids Ghibli BDs from Amazon. A little too niche to hope to find in stores. (Though I was shocked that my WM had Hokusai. They didn't even have Pocahontas or Mulan!)

I gave this Blu-ray a spin tonight. To me, this movie was always known as I Can Hear the Sea (a more literal translation of the Japanese title, Umi ga kikoeru). The official English title Ocean Waves may take some getting used to. The transfer is terrific--no complaints there. It destroys my old region 2 DVD. I was disappointed that the song that plays during the end credits was not translated or subtitled. The song is subtitled on my 25 year old fansub, but not on this Blu-ray. I always liked that song enough to listen to the whole thing. Ocean Waves is a little nostalgic for me because the very first issue of Animage magazine I picked up back in 1993, which my local comic shop had accidentally ordered, featured a piece of the original novel along with illustrations in the same style you see at the end of the movie.

I really enjoyed this movie and was really impressed by the 45-minute 10-year reunion bonus feature. It was neat getting to see the real locations that inspired the film and how accurately the artists recreated them. The Ghiblies: Episode 2 was pretty funny as well. Its inclusion makes me wish they would do a collection of Ghibli shorts. I do wish G-Kids had given some background info on it as I had to look it up. It debuted in theaters with The Cat Returns and is the follow up to a 12-minute TV special.

Yeah, there's not a lot of info about Ghiblis I out there, it would have been nice for some of that. I have the original Cat Returns DVD that includes episode 2, they went all out with it and that's why some might find it strange that the short has a 5.1 soundtrack but Ocean Waves only has 2.0.

Ummm, why is this movie called "Ocean Waves?" They never once go to the ocean and play on the beach. The only scene involving the ocean is when they go to Hawaii... and they don't even go to the beach... and we never see any waves at all. The scene on the cover of the blu ray is not even in the movie. I'm very confused. It doesn't make any sense!

Still confused... this movie has NOTHING to do with "hearing" the ocean or the sea. Like I said earlier, there is one small scene that takes place "close to the ocean" (while they're in Hawaii), but that's it!!!
![]() I think I'll make a movie entitled, "The Monster of All Monsters" and then not have any monsters in it. Last edited by anthonyls; 06-15-2017 at 06:38 PM. |

Maybe the ocean represents something ever changing, not stopping, something deep. Sometimes calm (also sound of ocean can be calming) or sometimes rough, dangerous, unpredictable that life can be or how the characters go through in life, etc. Again, I didn't see this movie, so I can't say exactly what it is. And maybe it doesn't really have an answer and it's just opens to individual's interpretation. Just think about the symbolism of it and DON'T take it literally. |

The movie takes place on Shikoku island during the flashback segments, that could be why.
Other Ghibli films have odd titles. Whisper of the Heart's title is literally "if you listen closely" which is just a throwaway line in Shizuku's script that has nothing to do with her plot. |
