I completely agree with your assessment. Reign of Fire is a seriously underrated film and Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale give absolutely stunning performances in this film.

We both really enjoyed the movie and Matthew McConaughey gives one of the best performances of his life. Amazing film. I quite like this movie. Too bad it wasn't a big hit. I've always really wanted a prequel showing the dragons taking over.

I'd buy a 4K UHD in a heartbeat.

I’m not so sure of that. The effects were really good, I think that sloppy CGI today would most likely result in an inferior version.

Compare Dragonslayer to Dragonheart for example. I prefer the older effects

btw, I realize that Reign Of Fire used CGI effects, but they were above average CGI, like Jurassic Park

Reign of Fire has been a favorite of mine for a long time. Rewatch once in a great while. Holds up well.

There are some fleeting moments when the VFX, which remains quite remarkable for the most part, reveals itself to be a product of the technical limitations for the time.
There is that one moment in the final act when McConaughey's character had fired the first magnesium arrow while positioned atop the tower. It was pretty obvious to me that he was in front of a green/blue screen during that scene where he also takes the leap with the axe.
I don't allow that to detract from how I felt about the movie, I still appreciate the story, the performances, and brilliant CGI. Technically, it could have been better. And whomever decides to do a new 4K transfer, they may want to negotiate re-keying that scene before the transfer, it should be possible, even without the raw footage.

Aside from a couple of instances as mentioned above, I agree that the CGI in Reign of Fire was generally well rendered. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the work rivals the original Jurassic Park films in terms of "realism". Poor CGI ruins films and I don't recall ever being taken out of this film by subpar effects.

Reign of Fire is highly entertaining. An epic post-apocalyptic yarn with good actors, likable characters and a compelling story - too bad it'll never make it to 4K. Luckily the Blu-ray is more than decent IMO.

It's unfortunate that it has yet to get a 4K release, but I'll remain optimistic it'll be released on 4K soon.
Ideally, it would have been nice to get it this year as a 20th anniversary edition, but they could probably still announce later this year and release it as an anniversary edition next year.

I went to catch this in the theaters in the day and thinking it was some amazing piece of cinema, haven't gone back to see if that claim holds up.

Around that time I also thought Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life was amazing too

This was the first movie I’ve ever seen Christian Bale in. And no, I haven’t seen or heard about American Psycho at that time (probably heard about Empire of the Sun, but didn’t know he starred in it). Little did we expect, he would become Batman eventually, and the rest they say, is history.

well after revisiting this one I'll say this--- the dragon effects are still totally cool and Matthew McConaughey is still a badass.. the movie is good though the story itself is thin and not always involving.

I was surprised how great the blu ray looks and sounds--- pretty terrific throughout and this is an oldie... with Disney in charge it may be a long time for a better release so don't hesitate getting this for those who don't already own it

A young Gerard Butler and also 'Vertical Limit' and 'Goldeneye' Bond girl Isabella Scorupco (as the tough as nails helicopter pilot) are in there too
