Cool The U2 thread

I looked at a bunch of threads here and couldn't find a U2 thread, so here it is. I know we have some fans on this forum, so here's a place to talk about them.

U2 is my favorite band. I became a fan in late 2007/early 08 (can't remember when exactly) after I watched U2: Rattle and Hum. And then I went to see U2 3D and that sealed the deal (I don't have a 3D TV, but I still want that movie to come out on Blu-Ray). My top 3 favorite albums are (in order) Achtung Baby, Pop and Zooropa. I think of them as a holy trinity. I was lucky enough to see them twice last year on the 360 tour (Philadelphia and Pittsbugh). In Philly, not only did I have General Admission tickets, but I got in the inner circle, which might not be hard, but I'm so glad that I did. From the concert videos (not personal experience), ZooTV and PopMart are my favorite tours, but 360 is close to those as well. I know it makes me sound like a n00b, but Where the Streets Have No Name is my favorite U2 song. Moment of Surrender is #2 and City of Blinding Lights is #3 (honorable mention: Zooropa).

So that's my long, boring post about my U2 fandom.

I got into U2 pretty easily after listening to most of my dad's copy of The Joshua Tree when I was really young. I then got myself into the band a bit more by listening to albums like Boy and War. Last year, I got to see the band live for the first time in Baltimore during their 360 tour and it was awesome. I've been listening to their Achtung Baby album ever since I got it from the library a couple of months ago and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite albums from them.

U2 took a little while to grow on me but eventually became one of my favourite bands. I think it was the first time I really sat down and listened to Sunday Bloody Sunday. The song just really captured my attention as did the rest of the War album. After that, U2 just became a staple of my listening and has been for years.

When I was a teenager, a buddy of mine picked me up to go cruising around. He had The Joshua Tree on cassette and said a mutual friend said to listen to this album. We started it and after a few songs I was like, OMFG! I got it on CD shortly after and it was played constantly for quite awhile. That was a pretty good introduction to U2!
I don't know which would be my favorite album from them. Either TJT or Achtung Baby. Both of those Albums should be on SACD or DVD-A and it's a crime that they're not.
I haven't made to effort to see them live yet, which is insane and something I have to correct.
I have the 360 tour and Rattle and Hum on Blu ray, but my favorite by quite a bit is Live In Boston on DVD. Live in Chicago is pretty great as well.
I don't listen to them as much as I used to, but I throw in an album every now and then.
U2 are awesome!

My love affair with U2 began when I was all of 9-10 years old, when the nacent MTV featured the video of a group of ragtag, puffy coifed Irish lads performing a song called "Gloria" in heavy rotation. A song which had all the rock energy of, say, The J. Geils Band (the first LP I ever purchased was FREEZE FRAME), but with a power, majesty and scope to the song and lyrics unlike anything available on Top 40 radio...or even the rapidly aging stuff my mother listened to from the already calcified decades of the '70s and '60s. My appreciation of them grew with "New Year's Day", "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "Pride" but it wasn't until the truly life-altering, transcendant arrival of "Where the Streets Have No Name" that I became "married" to the music of U2 and knew unequivocably that I had found the band that would define the soundtrack of my life forevermore. I have absolutely no sense of objectivity when it comes to this band--virtually everything they touch is perfection, in my eyes. Oh, and you're not a noob if you think "Where the Streets Have No Name" is their best song ever; you'd be misguided not to! Now, all these years later, I've seen them live twice (Popmart and 360°), and own every officially released U2 DVD and Blu-ray, as well as 240 U2 and U2-related CDs (brace yourself):

That sounds like vinyl and I'm very anti-vinyl. Which is sometimes a shame since, for most artists, there are a smattering of tracks exclusive to vinyl or, even more lamentably, digital download.

Whoops! Shame on me for not getting the joke! I pride myself on my humor radar, but I guess U2 collecting is too serious an artform for me, LOL!

My U2 collection isn't that big and I really don't have anything rare (although I do have Wide Awake in Europe) but it's not bad I suppose. I'll have to share in when I have time.

btw - what is your favorite U2 era. I like Achtung Baby and underrated Pop. I do not understand the have for Pop - I think it`s brilliant album ... ? and the videos too ... only album I dismiss is All That You Can't Leave Behind - do not even have it ... total meh ! for me ...

I was a pretty big fan from October to Achtung Baby. Zooropa killed it for me and don't really listen to much after that. They just lost that rawness of their earlier albums IMO. But I can def see why so many enjoy that later period, it just doesn't do it for me?

The Joshua Tree B-sides are excellent, but i feel they didnt have the same vibe as what ended up on the album, but it could've been a killer double album lol.The song Race Against Time, reminds me of Blade Runner haha.

The track "Luminous Times (Hold On to Love)" is my all-time favorite U2 b-side but, in regards to the rest of your sentence, I sure wouldn't go that far.
