Is the list price for that set really only 38 dollars? Not much of a deal if so, come on Amazon...

Nope! Amazon has set the list prices all wrong.

That makes more sense. I knew I paid more than 30 something back when I bought the DVD set...

I guess that makes the list price entry in the database all messed up, then...

Yeah, the listed MSRP prices aren't reliable, are often very close to the current price. You can still see the price histories on Camelcamelcamel.

People holding off for these deals probably wouldn't mind buying used copies, which sometimes have even better prices if the release is old enough.

Why don't they just turn themselves into Sam's Club already? They're half way there as it is.

Trying to comprehend "walmart" and "criterion" in the same sentence...

I'm still a huge fan of the B&N's Criterion sale. Membership has major benefits, plus the ability to stack coupons at select stores brings the price down to around $12 per disc.

Lucky for you, in LA they'd probably call in law enforcement if they hear you say Coupons and Criterions in one sentence.

Good luck with that. IIRC, the last Criterion sale had a HUGE snafu with coupons. I wouldn't be surprised if they took the few kinks that were not worked out last sale and had them set this time around.

Stacking only works sometimes and has been widely shut down.

Lets help with the math here.

40*50% = $20
10% Membership discount = $18
20% off stacked coupon = $14.40
Tax (lets assume 6%) = $15.25

If you are not a member = $16.96

So you save a mere $1.71 per title. Now since you are paying $25 for membership you need to by 15 titles to break even.

Still sound like a great deal? Sure doesn't to me.

And that assumes every transaction you make stacks.

Basically, if you are going to order more than $250 worth of stuff from Barnes and Noble over the course of a year, it's probably worth getting the membership. You can time it so that your membership period covers three Criterion sales, along with the assorted other sales throughout the year. I feel like I got my money's worth out of a year's membership, but I also don't think I'll be renewing it this year, especially after they pulled the coupons.

You wait until the 1st sale has already begun to purchase your membership, which will allow it to overlap into the beginning of the third (where most of your purchases would be if you hold out until the sales to buy Criterions).

Exactly. I did not deliberately do this with my membership, but it should work out that way, depending on when exactly the next sale starts. Just wait until the second week of the (first) sale before you buy your membership.

I have not had any luck with this anymore. Back in July 2016, I was able to grab 6 Blu ray releases and an Eclipse release for $123+ shipped (saved $38 with a coupon). Barnes and Noble has since cracked down on any type of coupon with a Criterion sale. I think unless you go to a B&M store for Barnes and Noble and happen to get a clerk who is willing to manually punch it through, you aren't getting much beyond 50% off these days. That's why I always like finding a more than 50% off deal on a Criterion release from Amazon.
