Now I need to go to bed. I've been listening to the single non-stop for about three hours and I'm starting to go a bit bonkers.

On the other hand, I'm incredibly excited for the new album!

For the moment, it seems that Sony might be issuing the same Lightbox, CDs and vinyl in North America, Europe and possibly even Australia. So far, the only edition that has a unique UPC/EAN for a region seems to be the Japanese Blu-spec CD2 CD.

EDIT: This is no longer strictly true with the Target and Walmart Exclusives, see below:

Deluxe Lightbox CD: 0194397444728 (ASIN: B08KFYXGBL)
Standard CD: 0194397446326 (ASIN: B08KGT79CH)
Japanese BSCD2 CD: 4547366478396 (ASIN: B08KQBYRQH / B08KTLXDT1)
Black LP: 0194397255614 (ASIN: B08KH2L8DH)
Opaque Red LP: 0194398166711 (ASIN: B08KSDT351)
Silver LP: ?
Yellow LP: 0194398166612
Picture Disc LP: 0194398166414 (ASIN: B08KKNQ9XB)
Cassette(s): ?

MediaMarkt / Saturn Exclusive (?) Standard CD (with Bottle Opener): 0194398171524

Target Exclusive Standard CD (with Sticker Pack): 0194398186825
Target Exclusive Black LP (with T-shirt): 0194398187013
Walmart Exclusive Opaque Red LP (different to above?): 0194398186610

I ordered the Lightbox, the Japanese BSCD2 CD and the black vinyl, and I may yet get the red vinyl, though as all the art seems to be identical, probably not. I'm also tempted to pick up one of the cassettes just for the hell of it, even though I know that's even sillier than what I've already bought and am planning to buy.

Listening to the song, and you could have convinced me this was a lost track from long ago.

That's the best compliment I can give it

There is also a Walmart Exclusive Opaque Red Vinyl that has a different UPC/EAN to the other one in Europe and Australia. The one is 0194398186610, though you may need to drop the first "0" as I think Walmart only uses UPCs.

Angus went through the vaults of unreleased songs that he and Malcolm had written. Every song on the new album gives Malcolm a writing credit. It's gonna be vintage AC/DC...the way we want it.

Yet another variant: Standard CD with bottle opener apparently exclusive to MediaMarkt and Saturn stores in German-speaking Europe. The EAN for this one is 0194398171524:

AC DC were the first hard rock band that i got into back in 1988, my brother had bought a bunch of singles (kind of lucky dip thing) from a record shop and gave me Heatseeker from AC DC, as he wasn't a fan. 30+ years later and no looking back. Seriously looking forward to this album, as it may be their last, as Brian Johnson is now 73, and with the extended release pattern the band have, i can't see him releasing another album in his late 70's...

Okay, so first the negatives:

1. The Lightbox is very unexciting, similar to what happened with the Limited Edition of Backtracks. The light up logo is nice, but all it does is light up and play a short piece of "Shot in the Dark", and through a tiny speaker, at that. Apparently, the Tool version of this concept actually had a video display that played a video clip meant to enhance the song, which I believe was "Fear Inoculum", but AC/DC's version is even simpler despite being similarly priced. Inside the lightbox is a charger and the softpack CD, which has a little instruction manual placed inside describing how to charge the box.

It does look nice and is made out of material that is somewhat sturdy, but unless you are a hardcore fan, you really don't need the Lightbox, which costs about 3-4 times as much as the softpack CD on its own.

2. Sadly, as anticipated, the CD is loud and compressed (DR7), although it's not Death Magnetic terrible (that album was DR3!), I did experience some ear fatigue while listening:

I need to listen again a few more times to let it really settle in, but on first listen, the album is strong, stronger than I hoped it would be, with lots of good tunes and at least 2-3 more tracks that could easily be breakout singles, like "Through the Mists of Time" or perhaps "Money Shot".

Like everyone else, I have had a really shitty year, but listening to this album put a smile on my face the whole time. I only wish we had more new AC/DC media, especially a new concert Blu-ray--apparently they have at least one ready to go from a few years ago--but for now, this will get me right through to the new year.

Of course it's a small speaker. They have to fit it into the package so it can't be very big. I just got it and I opened it up at the store I got it from and we all thought it was pretty cool.

I suppose at least they gave fans the option of a regular version instead of that overpriced crap. Damn thing probably costs all of 5 bucks to manufacture.

Reviews are saying this is arguably AC DC's greatest album in 30 years, and i'm inclined to strongly agree. This really is the band's best work since The Razor's Edge.

I really, really like the album, especially "Realize", "Shot in the Dark", "Through the Mists of Time", "Demon Fire", and "Money Shot", but the whole thing is incredible, really. I don't think it's hyperbole to say it's their best album in decades. This album is literally the best thing to happen in 2020.

It's also slightly confusing because it's not immediately apparent how it opens or works. The side that hides the button to make the box work also feels like it could rip off. The official unboxing video actually shows the box with that side removed, but it doesn't seem like it should be removed...

Like I said, as these cheap cardboard trinkets go, it feels sturdy to some degree and it will probably survive years of storage if you are a collector. I think it would have been worth a $5-10 premium, but it's not really worth almost $50, especially when the one on the Tool album does more for similar money.

This short video (not mine) gives a really good idea of exactly what the box does:

By comparison, here is the Tool version. I don't own this, but I'm now strongly considering getting one. The video screen starts about 2 minutes into the unboxing video, and while I didn't want to ruin the whole thing for myself, it's clear that it plays a neat little original video clip with sound that goes on for over 6 minutes.

The biggest problem is that both of these editions are almost exactly the same price (about US$50), and actually, are from the same parent company, too: Sony Music, although Tool are on RCA Records and AC/DC are on Columbia Records. The Tool album is also getting scarce, apparently.

I love AC/DC, much more than Tool, but I think even the most hardcore AC/DC fan would have no trouble admitting that the Tool limited edition CD runs rings around the AC/DC limited edition CD.

Regarding the flap that hides the button. It does come off. It's just held on there with the same type of glue they peels right off clean. Also, if you look closely, you can open that piece without having to remove it. there are two tabs that slide into slots to keep it closed. Lastly, you will need to either remove it or open it at some point because the USB slot for charging it is under there as well. My opinion is that it's meant to be removed because of the type of adhesive that is used as well as the fact that there is artwork underneath.

One last thing. I have the Tool CD as well as this one and you really can't compare the two. For Tool, the packaging is part of the presentation thanks to their guitarist, who is heavily involved in it. He likes to do something that's never been done before and it's also an incentive for people to buy a physical copy instead of just downloading it. I'm guessing that AC/DC didn't have a big hand in producing this special edition. It's for collector's like me. For others, the regular, and much cheaper, version is perfectly fine.

I'm not a fan of single-album special editions, but anthologies are different. As a major Iron Maiden fan for 30 years, i have the Eddie's Head box set, Eddies Archive (numbered) plus a signed edition of Saxon's Solid Book Of Rock. Got the new album on CD, and that will do me just fine.
