The U.S. Navy is drafting new guidelines for the reporting of encounters with "unidentified aircraft."

The Navy told Politico that the new guidelines for pilots and other personnel are in response to a series of sightings of "unknown, highly advanced aircraft" that have intruded on sensitive military formations and facilities.

"There have been a number of reports of unauthorized and/or unidentified aircraft entering various military-controlled ranges and designated airspace in recent years," the Navy told Politico. "For safety and security concerns, the Navy and the [U.S. Air Force] takes these reports very seriously and investigates each and every report."

The service plans to update and formalize the process of reporting incidences of unknown aircraft to authorities.
