https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/chandra/news/black-hole-image-makes-history Astronomers have taken the first ever image of a black hole, which is located in a distant galaxy. It measures 24 billion miles across - three million times the size of the Earth - and has been described by scientists as "a monster". The black hole is 55 million light years (324,500,000,000,000,000,000) miles away and was photographed by a network of eight telescopes across the world. It was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a network of eight linked telescopes. Last edited by x7q3; 04-14-2019 at 06:22 AM. |

This is honestly mind blowing to me. Such an amazing story, and one of the most impressive things I think I've seen in my lifetime. The sizes, and distances they are talking about are absolutely unfathomable.

I agree. It really is mind blowing. I read in one article that because of the way light bends around a black hole, if you were at the even horizon you could see the back of your own head.

Sweet. Now I can cut my own head of hair all the time. The back always tripped me up.

I think one thing that people (at least people I've seen talking about this online) seem to be overlooking is that what we are seeing is 55 million years old. I don't know if these things can grow in size/mass but I do wonder what it is like right now.
Apparently the black hole is bigger than our entire solar system, and has jets of "something" shooting out from either side of it and they're extending for 5,000 light years. I just can't wrap my head around this thing! (although I apparently could if I was at the event horizon!) |

![]() [Show spoiler] But black holes could be little bit more investigated or is that hard to get to them. But i gotta say, distance from Earth to one hole is scary to me![]() |

Easily one of the most exciting weeks I remember having in recent memory. Next stop, to get something through it and send information back.
