you've got to be ****ing kidding me!
![]() https://www.thecollegefix.com/school...g-of-students/ while i've said in another thread that i wouldn't wear something that expensive...who the **** do these people think they are by telling someone their kid can't wear something given to them that may cost more than another kid's parents can afford?! if i were to buy my kid (not that i have any) an expensive piece of clothing (or several) and someone told me my kid they couldn't wear it because it'd be "poverty shaming" to other students...i'd start buying all kinds of expensive shit and telling them to wear it whenever/wherever they want. and i'd DARE anyone to send my kid home from school for wearing it. NO ONE is gonna tell me what my kid can or can't wear if i bought it with my own money. is it my fault that other parents don't make the same amount as me? is it my fault that other parents don't buy their kids expensive things? HELL NO! so how is it my problem that other kids might feel "poverty shamed" because my kid is wearing something expensive that their parents can't afford? let's not work to better ourselves and our kids lives...let's shame others into coming down to our level so we're all equal money-wise and nobody is ever allowed to have nicer things than anyone else. i swear...some people are just straight up pussies about every little thing. they want everyone else to conform to their screwed up, low-quality values instead of trying to make themselves better. |

I can't believe how many different ways of shaming people have come up with these days. I'm pretty sure "shame-shaming" is actually a thing too believe it or not. This is the kind of shit I can't help but laugh at, it's tragic and pathetic. The human race gets stupider and stupider by the day.

I'm pretty sure it all began with "fat shaming." Obese people demanding respect for fatness, which kind of promotes a unhealthy lifestyle in most cases? Sort of a contradiction if you ask me.

How about athletics shaming? We will no longer time your running speed, because whether you complete the mile in 7 minutes or 17 minutes, both times are equal. Someone being faster than you does not make you slower.

I'm sure that a lot of thought went into this decision. Teenagers are mean and they absolutely would start teasing and making fun of people that didn't have these coats if they were the "cool" coats to have. It could lead to kids trying to steal the coats from stores or from other kids. It could lead to fights in the school over the coats and the teasing that was going on.
I went to high school with a guy and he was the classic nerd. Thick glasses, greasy hair and really quiet. One Friday he got on my bus accidentally. The "cool" kid in the back yelled at him to get his bifocals checked. Several hours later there was a knock on his apartment door and when his mom opened it there was a police officer standing there holding his glasses. He had jumped from his seventh floor bedroom window. If my school had done something to stop the teasing and bullying he'd still be alive....and I don't find that humourous at all. |

Fat shaming is a good thing, especially when people embrace the fat and are proud of being unhealthy slobs.

That said, a kid should be able to wear whatever they want. Otherwise - go with uniforms. I do recall a study that found uniforms actually don't help tho.... so eh, just gotta parent and hope the kid stands up for themselves or doesn't do something stupid. |

Isn't this sort of thing basically the reason many countries have school uniforms in the first place? To avoid the "I look better than you" crap.

I went to Jr. High/High School in one of the poorest areas of Calgary because they were the closest schools to our new suburb which was much wealthier. I can kind of see the logic because the schools did have a lot of issues with cliques and stuff like that spawned from the wealth gap. But while I can see the logic it doesn't mean it isn't beyond flawed. First the clothes were hardly the only way of knowing who was wealthier so it doesn't change that. Second it would have just created even more problems. Personally I never got caught up in any of the cliques from the wealth gap since I just cared about who I got along with but admittedly if I started to be told I couldn't wear my clothes it could have formed resentment about where I was attending school. If there is one thing teens don't respond well to it is being told what to do. Also where does it stop? Get overheard talking about a concert with friends during lunch other students couldn't afford to attend and get suspended? Bologna sandwiches the only allowed lunch?
Plus one day we are all just going to equally facepalm about how we dressed as teens anyway. Expensive clothes didn't change that I had some really weird fashion sense as a teen ![]() Quote:

and yes, i can do a similar thread about shooting and banning guns. but i won't because i've already made statements about that in other posts. also, it inevitably turns into a political tirade from both sides on the issue and i will not get drawn into that discussion due to forum rules. well, i don't think i'm being a snowflake about it. i was just stating my disgust over something that no one used to get upset about. there are different classes of people in the world, with regard to how much money one makes/has. it's a fact of life. but telling someone they can't wear a certain item of clothing simply because their parents make more money than another kids parents is absolutely asinine, in my opinion. i'm not being a snowflake about it, i was just stating my opinion on the matter. so call me a snowflake, call me triggered, call me whatever you want. it's only my opinion about a subject that i feel doesn't even need to exist. |

I'm not sure if I'd send my kids (don't have any) to school in a $1,000 Moncler jacket if I could afford it (I wouldn't buy one for them either), and I doubt they'd feel inadequate if they didn't have one. Growing up most of my classmates knew you didn't bring the nicest stuff to school, it was either going to get wrecked or nicked.
The irony to this story is probably half the students with these jackets are wearing eBay knock-offs from the Middle Kingdom and they are half the price of the other kids' jackets (plus shipping). There were all types of kids in my school and I never felt better or worse than any of them, and they were better off and worse off than our family. It was our "friends" that made us feel inadequate. |

Lol. I knew this was going to be about Canada Goose even before reading a word of it.
The jackets have indeed become a sort of status symbol. Most of the people I've seen wearing these are young millenials but now I'm beginning to see other groups with these. I spotted a fast food worker last week wearing one and it threw me for a loop (maybe she had a knockoff?). You know you've got a hot-ticket luxury item when bootleggers start knocking them off with similar-looking logos. The novelty's going to wear off someday and they'll have to find some other way to fleece (no pun intended) people. My personal take on this is I hate people who buy something just so that they can prove they're well off. Believe it or not, I think the only reason most people buy these is to show off. Those jackets don't look any warmer than my discounted Calvin Klein bubble coat that I purchased at Burlington for $69.99. My jacket keeps me so warm I actually sweat in it. I would never spend $800 on a coat. Frankly, it's disgusting what people throw away money on. |

What people pays for anything is their own problem. If one chooses to pay ridiculous amount of money to buy torn jeans, have at it. I'll continue to buy my discounted jeans ($20 or less) and use the difference to buy movies.
It becomes society's problem when people equate/believe what they own = worth of their character. Personally, I can't stand seeing Canada Goose. There are too many now + too ugly but people still flock to it. |

No... it's not okay. You do not know that person's history. They may have a medical condition that causes issues with weight gain. Medications that treats other ails have side effects causing weight gain. It's not as easy as putting down the fork.

Seriously though, you realize stuff like this gets in the news because it’s abnormal right?? It by no means is the norm and has affected nothing but knocking that fragile chip on your shoulder off. Last edited by Falaskan; 12-31-2019 at 07:05 PM. |
