Not sure if Warner still has the rights to this one. If they do, perhaps next Fall as part of their influx of classics for their 90th anniversary?

I like the original better than either of the remakes.

Nope. There's a placeholder page on blu-ray.com though, you can put your email in and click the "Notify Me" button and they'll send you an email if it's ever due to come out.

I really enjoyed this as a kid (early 80s), but last time I watched it the dialog seem to rushed and it annoyed me. I would rather have This Island Earth get a Blu-ray release.

Has there been any news about the upcoming blu-ray release from Japan this coming February? I wonder if it's the extended edition? Either way I'm stoked!!

Just pre-ordered this from Amazon Japan

It is Warner (in the US anyway), but I think there's a problem finding decent elements. There's the same problem with another Howard Hawks 50's RKO film, The Big Sky.

According to Amazon Japan the running time is 87 minutes which is the running time of the extended edition.

Thumbs up

Count Me In. I still own DVD (now still unwatched piles) and I'll remember my father bought me a colorized version of VHS way back to around 1995 or 1996 in Halloween and now not anymore when I got it on DVD.

Default Region Free?

Anyone know, or have any idea, if this release will be region free or at least if it'll play on region B players?

Bumping this in hope that a more well informed forum member has some news of an imminent release?

There's a release in Japan. It's cut and looks like shit, so I wouldn't import it. Wait for WAC, hopefully.

Thing from Another World, The
US - N/A
JP - AVC 32654 kbps, LPCM 2.0 1536 kbps 16-bit, cut @ 80 min, no English subs (Region A)

Looks on Caps-a-Holic.com for image comparisons. I recommend using the PNG option with full screen comparison.

Definitely a Top 10 wish list movie for me. I recall somebody saying that WAC is aware of the demand but they're having trouble finding 35MM elements for the cut footage, which so far they only have in 16MM. I'm only familiar with the full-length version, so watching a cut version if that's all they can release would be strange. Hope they can find those elements. Until then, the '03 DVD still looks good and has gotten a lot of watches from over the last 15 or so years.

No. The negatives are lost, and this is the statement from WAC about releasing The Thing From Another World:

Quote:
We would like to. This film presents particular challenges (evident in the master used for DVD) as 35mm elements were cut for theatrical reissue, and we had to use sub-standard 16mm elements to create a complete version in the past. We are seeking 35mm elements of the original version for a Blu-ray upgrade, but the prospects are not encouraging at the present time. Thanks
So I wouldn't expect anything anytime soon (and temper expectations when they do release it, because it might be the best they can do with the elements they have).

Has anyone heard any more as to if there will ever be a release? I've seen 16mm that looks pretty good in BR.
