Yup, its definitely an HBO series I want to see on Blu someday. Though, I wonder if its effect shots were done in 480p or not. HBO is known for their film quality mini-series, but considering when it came out, doing TV effects shots in High-Def wasn't quite standard or common.

The FX shots could well be the reson this as not made it to Blu-ray yet.

Those FX shots are the curse of so many scifi shows making it to Blu-ray

That I can't say, I am not very good at spoting stuff like that while others here make it their life's work It does look pretty good. The translation seem to be France French and not local French (huge difference). If it was local I might say it could well be an upscale, from France who can say?

Considering that CBS Home Entertainment has not (and probably will not) release Deep Space Nine and Voyager on BD because redoing the VFX would be too expensive, I would not count on HBO releasing From the Earth to the Moon on high-def Blu-ray any time soon.

If HBO did decide to do this, I hope they release it with the video in its original 1998 1.33:1 aspect ratio rather than the bastardized widescreen reformatted version used in the "Signature" DVD 5-disc set of 2005.

USA Bumping the Thread: Eight Years Later....

Sadly, HBO Home Entertainment still has not announced a release of From the Earth to the Moon.

I have the 2005 "Signature Edition" set; I got it used on eBay about 10 years ago, but if a BD edition is ever made, I'll buy it.

Except for the few shots of the Mercury flight, all of the space shots were done with physical miniatures shot on 35mm film (an 8 month motion-control miniature shoot). So the only work to fix up to bring up to blu-ray standards would be the backgrounds plates for the ship elements, like the moon and the thruster animation, sort of like how they did TNG remastered, only a lot less work.

There had better be a 4:3 option because if it's the butchered 16:9 used for the most recent DVD set then this is not as intended. The 16:9 composition actually removed important details as well as being not as originally intended. I suspect there will be a storm of protest if HBO has not learned the lesson.

The show was originally shown on TV in HD in some areas. It is how I saw it in NY. My memory is apparently faulty asi I thought in 16x9. The Titles are in widescreen But apparently the content was mostly 4x3

Misleading me is the IMDB site which list it as 1.78 aspect ration. Comments elsewhere by one of the editors say they delivered HD 4x3. Editing in HD. The original (where not showing archive video) is mostly on film and hopefully they go back to that.

The UK DVD set was 16:9 & it looked okay to me. I bought the set about 12 years ago & didn't get around to watching it until a few years ago. I thought the episodes up to & including the moon landing were quite brilliant...& then the next episode, the second moon landing, seemed like it was played for laughs, it broke the spell for me & I never did finish the series.

Pete Conrad and Al Bean DID play Apollo 12 for laughs. It's accurate!
