True to my word, I have this set in pre-order and probably will receive it on Tuesday.

I hope that the BD version presents the miniseries in its original 4:3 aspect ratio, though I'm going to be fatalistic and anticipate that it will be the "altered for widescreen" version from the 2005 Signature Edition instead.

Default I am very concerned about the probability of 16:9 cropped ... but:

"The episodes have been remastered for high-definition, and the standard-definition visual effects have been replaced with new CG effects based on reference models from NASA.
A Blu-ray edition of the remastered episodes will be released July 16 with Dolby ATMOS audio."

My copy has arrived and the sleeve states 16:9.
Damn it!
I can only hope they've done something clever. At least the redone cgi WILL be native 16:9 so only the live footage is cropped this time.

Oh ... and the audio is NOT Atmos on the blu-ray set; it's DTS MA!

Someone in the primary thread got the Blu-ray release and reported that the audio is indeed Atmos. I'll find out tomorrow if Amazon delivers as promised. What kind of speaker set-up do you have?

Ahhh, OK. I do have an Atmos system but I was at work earlier and read the audio description off the sleeve notes. I hope they are wrong.

UPDATE: There IS an Atmos logo on the sleeve but it's tiny and I missed it.
Bizarrely we have Dolby-Atmos and DTS then. Good.
Apologies for the error!

It would be cropped regardless. There comparison screen shots on page 11 of the other thread that show both the 16:9 and 4:3 versions have data the other doesn't have. There Is stuff on the bottom (and sometimes top) of the image in the 4:3 that is cut off in 16:9 but the 16:9 versions has more to the sides.

DVDtalk has a review of the original widescreen release...

https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/1778...ature-edition/

...where they note that it was filmed with both aspect ratios in mind and that theoretically both should be just as good as the other.

We don't view the world on a vertical plane, but a horizontal one. As a result, I generally find a wider field of view to be more effective. It gives me a greater sense of being there, framing issues aside depending on the source material and original intent.

To be fair, sleeve details are notorious for being wrong - wouldn't put any faith in their accuracy ever! It also doesn't have a DTS track - unless you count the Spanish dub that's present.

From what I've seen so far, they changed the main title sequence a bit. And they have done a good job at redoing the special effects sequences.
