After reading the above article on the retoration of 20,000 Leagues, my one question is . . . Where is the blu ray?! Very excitied about this news and also the restoration of the 40th anniv. edition of Cabaret. It's great to see that these true classic films are getting the attention that they deserve!

Disney has historically been "late to the party" regarding home video releases, and this dates back to Beta/VHS, laser disc and DVD, but never so evident as with Blu-Ray. Now this comment is aimed at Disney live action films, and specifically, those produced under Walt Disney. I can recall during video tape's infancy when Disney's very first releases were the animated "Alice in Wonderland" and "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea." Disney tended to test the waters with these two films, and slowly but surely, the vaults opened and great movies eventually saw wide release in all the home theater formats mentioned previously. Regarding the live action classics, laser disc and DVD have seen the most releases, but neither so late into their maturity as Blu-Ray. I am quite puzzled by Disney reluctance to release their live action classics, and with the exception of news tidbits that "Twenty Thousand" had received a restoration and 4K HD scan, the Mouse House has been totally mum. Well, here's hoping that someone at Disney will realize that market saturation for Blu-Ray has come of age, and a large market for these cinematic gems exists, specifically:

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
Darby O'Gill and the Little People
The Black Hole
Swiss Family Robinson
Mary Poppins
In Search of the Castaways
Treasure Island
So Dear to my Heart
The Parent Trap
Pollyanna
Davy Crockett
The Moon Spinners
Summer Magic
Island at the Top of the World
Bedknobs and Broomsticks

Great post Sinbad. Agree completely. Really hoping that the 20,000 Leagues restoration means a BD release is imminent.

The 2 points of interest that give me hope for 20,000 Leagues are:
1) I've seen it OTA HD which is usually a good sign for an upcoming BD release
2) Maybe Disney is waiting for the Fincher remake to gain some steam before releasing

the 4K restoration has been randomly making festival screenings in and around L.A almost exclusively, but Cinemark is doing a big favor to anyone who has a XD screen and showing the DCP/restoration work on the big screen on October 25th.

'Mary Poppins' is showing the week earlier on the 17th - I had no idea that the restoration of that title was that far down the line and ready for encoding in DCP form.

Looking forward to seeing both of these in the theater!

you know I missed "Mary Poppins" so I can't comment on that DCP, but the DCP of "20,000 Leagues" was a little disappointing - the image seemed to be on the soft side and the sharpness really wasn't there - it was a very hit and miss transfer - I'm thinking that this wasn't the 4K restoration, of course I could be wrong, but what I saw on the big screen this afternoon, left much to be desired - the 4-track sound though sounded fantastic! - It wasn't flat out terrible, and it was great to see it on the large 'XD' screen, but I'm thinking the eventual bluray might have better PQ [fingers crossed]

The flyer found in Cinderella announcing a slew of future releases (dates unspecified) bodes well for Disney's classic live action films (those produced during Disney's lifetime) finally coming to market in Blu-ray. Most exciting for me is Pollyanna, so Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea can't be too far behind!

Not sure how you came to that conclusion, but at this point I'll take it. Maybe it will come out in 2014 for the 60th Anniversary?

The mere fact, as I mentioned, that Disney live-action classics are finally starting to be released.

Well we shall see. Although I'm more encouraged having seen this OTA HD and, as I mentioned, the 60th Anniversary being 2014.

Default *Bump* for 20K under the Sea and other Disney live action

Well, it is 2014 and Disney is missing out on a great opportunity to release a 20,000 Leagues 60th anniversary edition. I think they underestimate the amount of us willing to buy these great old live action Disney films!

The only good thing about their feet dragging could be that we will get beautifully done editions when they are finally on the street.

Here's to hoping...
