Default power dvd 16 no longer plays blu-ray

Hi Every one,

I have powerdvd 16 and windows 10 pro 64 bit and 32gb of DDR4 on each set up.

As Cyberlink Tech Support appear 'to be on holiday' I'd appreciate help here.

My MSI laptop with 7Th Gen I5 CPU and combo GTX1050/ Intel HD620 recently decided that it was going to retire from 1080p blu-ray playback, even though the Cyberlink software advisor says that I should be good to go. The most obvious trait on the laptop is a purple screen when I try to play a 1080p blu-ray.

Everything Cyberlink is 100% up to date on both installs.

Since my ATX tower that is simalarly speced plays 1080p with powerDVD 16 using a separarte licence key I used that as the reference, I made sure both have the same windows related updates

Is DVD discs and audio CD’s working in your BD-ROM drive? If yes and its only standard 25GB to 50GB discs not playing then the problem could be the optical drive no longer reads Blu-ray discs. Go to “This PC” and see if the optical drive lists the GB size of the Blu-ray that was inserted, if not then there is a problem with your optical drive not working and it is not a software problem. If the optical drive display’s the GB information in Windows 10, then it is not a hardware problem, but instead a software problem.

What we are talking about is powerdvd 16 to watch common 1080p movies that might be reviewed on this forum. Cyberlink's own software advisor says that there is zero wrong. Yet when I try to play any blu-ray movie I get a purple screen and some crap about the graphics driver. The software has been on my completely updated windows 10 laptop for 3 years.

DVD plays 100%

Imagine being in a job doing things the same way for three years setting aside changes in the law or procedure then being told 'John Doe it has been decided that you are failing to do your job properly'

Ok so if in “My PC” in Windows 10 the disc is showing its being read, then the problem is not with the BD-ROM drive. You can try updating the graphics driver to the latest version to see if that fixes the problem. I had to do that on a old 2007 Notebook computer for a family member several years ago and it fixed the issue. If you have the latest graphics driver installed also try rebooting the PC and power cycling it to clear up issues.

Yes I've done those things, but still get the disc starting up but going to a purple screen and som faint audio. The graphics driver is new this month. Many thanks to you

You can also try rolling back the graphics driver to a older version. Or uninstalling Power DVD and reinstalling it. Try using another PC with a BD-ROM drive to see if the issue goes away. Also try playing another Blu-ray title, 20th Century Fox Blu-ray’s are the hardest to play because of security issues and the picture sometimes acts up unless you are using the latest version of PowerDVD Ultra.

Yes I'll try rolling back the driver at a civilised time as it is near bed time here. The problem one is a problem with any title I try. Yes an identical Powerdvd 16 on my tower works 100% including fox titles. Many thanks to you

I tried rolling back graphics drivers, sadly no improvement, though no harm in trying. I suspect that a Cyberlink update patch can't be far away. Many thanks to you

Alternate methods would be:

Use Leawo Blu-ray Player, which is 100% free & safe but playback can be spotty (depending on the title, Fox/Disney BDs are the most fickle).

The latest version of VLC combined with MakeMKV, which there are guides to do via Google-fu.

I see you checked the graphics card and drivers and tested playback on a different PC with the same software installed. To rule out any issues with PC internals, drivers, disc drives, and the movie discs themselves:

Remove latest Cyberlink software version and reinstall with older version.

Or buy a new/different PC and see what it does there.

High 5 to you SpaceBlackKnight, yes I've heard of Leawo Blu-ray Player being quite well thought of with some caveats.

If a solution is not forthcoming from Cyberlink I may well give Leawo Blu-ray Player a crack of the whip. Yes I have some Fox and Disney titles. It won't hurt me as there is an Oppo 203 here too. I believe the Leawo Blu-ray Player is region acnostic.

Have a good day now
