Goldfinger is a great example of a film that is better than the novel it is based on. Talking about novels, Ian Fleming, unfortunately, passed away a few weeks before the release of this film. I guess, he would have seen some portions of it (if not the entire film in a special screening) and been proud of what he saw on screen.
The film introduces or fine tunes various Bond elements including the Q branch, the car (Aston Martin DB5), the use of song in the title sequence, etc. Goldfinger remains a fascinating watch for Connery's performance, various segments including the Switzerland one which is among the best (if not the best) in the franchise, the villain and the henchman, Bond girls, etc. ... Talking about the Bond girls, it has serious moments when the two Masterson sisters die. As for negatives, selected ones include the undigestable "people pretending to sleep" in the climax (but at least, they tried to do something different). Jack Lord from Dr. No could have been brought in to play Felix Leiter, who could have been more investigative to uncover the plot than the convenient "Miss Galore" changed her mind. In short, the climax though interesting could have been written better. A recap of many of its interesting segments: Pre Title Sequence, where Bond blows off a drug warehouse/plant. The title sequence. Bond versus Goldfinger in Miami. Lady painted in Gold. The golf game. Bond in Switzerland (includes the demonstration of the car, great score, "I expect you to die, Mr. Bond", etc.) Overall, the film continues to remain one of the best Bond films. How do you rate the film esp. among Connery films? Is its popularity mainly driven by nostalgia or is its content still alluring? |

Goldfinger IMO stands at the top of the Bond franchaise. It's what made all the future bond movies what they were:
Great villians: Odd Job and Goldfinger The introduction of " The James Bond Car." BTW - Jaguar was asked to participate and provide cars for Goldfinger. They turned down Eon Production's offer while Aston Martin jumped at the chance. They even built the special DB5 with all the gadgets in it. Bond Girls: Jill and Tillt Masterson, ***** Galore. Com on - that name! OMG! Great action sequences including cubing a lincoln continential. The villian's lair The laser which few if any people even knew excisited. And noi it didn't look like that at all. The use of Ft. Knox which to Joe Public was like Area 51 at the time. I could go on and on about what makes Goldfinger the #1 Bond movie. I don't expect all of you to agree with me. Frankly I could care less if you don't. But I do know there are others besides me who feel the same way. |

I don't have a particular Bond film that is at #1. There are a group of top tier Bond films which are more or less equal. Top tier Bond films include Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, The Spy Who Loved Me, The Living Daylights, Casino Royale, etc. ... Having Goldfinger as #1 is perfectly fine much like having any of the top tier Bond films as #1!

This still remains one of my favorite despite being so old. Connery in his prime, so many iconic scenes. I love the scene when M, Bond, and the other guy are having dinner. Really showed Bonds expertise in his tastes of liquor. Had all the perfect ingredients going for it. Really wish they would make a 4k of this one at least.

Yeah, you could do it that way ... However, I like all Bond actors more or less the same, so for me, it is less about who the Bond actor is and more about the acting performance of various characters, script, stunts, score, Flemingness, a cultural journey where applicable, etc.
