I guess I'd go with 30 Days of Night

Why? Danny Huston

Gorgeous horror movie. The setting and effects in that movie still hold up very well. And yes, Huston's black eyes are forever ingrained in my head.

Session 9 (2001). Its a film that gets under your skin without any reliance on the typical Horror tropes of gore or jump scares.

Someone said Black Swan isn't a horror movie, so my pick is...

I would probably say The Descent. It did something quite different from anything else out there really, and was truly terrifying. I also think the film has excellent replay-value, and it manages to creep me out no matter how many times I've seen it.

I'd say these are among the best:

The Decent
28 Days Later
The VVitch
[REC] (and [REC]2 as well)
Hereditary

At least somewhat "off the top of my head," after giving it some fairly good thought I am going with:

It's beautiful and disturbing and unsettling. Glazer does an unsurprisingly fantastic job behind the camera, and Scarlett is, as always, mesmerizing in front of it. The soundscape is like something wrapped around you and it won't let go.

The whole thing is just brilliant, as far as I'm concerned. And it's very different, unique.

Zombie's Halloween II. Vicious brutality fused with surreal nightmarish imagery that goes beyond anything seen in the franchise before or since. As a matter of fact, it goes beyond most movies, period. Also one of the most emotionally shattering stories about loss and trauma I've ever seen. Brad Dourif's face when he realizes what happened to his daughter will stay with me forever.

This movie was truly horrific. I've only seen it once and, frankly, I'm not sure I want to see it again.

I started that film last week. It was so bad I stopped after half an hour. The original is so much better.
(no offense if you liked it)

Seconded on "The Ring", I saw it again last month rewatching horror movies leading up to Halloween. Here is movie that starts off like a Wes Craven Scream teen slasher, only to shift gears into a brilliant supernatural detective story. The visuals, the music, the cast is all top notch and there is an even a meta element with the VHS tapes, at the time an abandonned technology in favor of digital discs, now a relic for anyone discovering the movie. It's all these elements combined with a strong director that made this way better than any American remake of Asian horror out to be!

Also a nod to Inside (a l'interieur) as runner up gorefest.

Inside (2007) - An invasion like that could scarily happen in real life. The gore is excellent. Great tense moments leading up to the inevitable confrontation between the two women.

It can interchange with Saw (2004) as my #1 though.

^ this

Also, I know I'm in the minority on this one, but I'd throw in Human Centipede 2 - it was everything part 1 was trying to do, and surpassed into a film, that was far more horrific, ultra-nasty and unforgettable.

I agree about The VVitch, but It Follows to me came across as a glorified overrated student-made film.
