I remember thinking The Conjuring was great, except for the ending. Upon a recent rewatch, I found the movie had effective parts, but was trying way too hard in others, to the point of cliche.

I find I Saw The Devil to be the best horror film of the last 20 years.

A close second is House of the Devil.

My first choice would be The Descent

followed by The Hole, May, Satan's little helper, Dagon, Wither (aka: cabin of the dead), The devil's backbone, Macabre (aka: Darah), Splinter, The Bay, and We are still here.

The already often mentioned House of the devil, Session 9 and Rec. are also very fine films

Antichrist (2009) I choose this because I found it to be one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen. Lars Von Trier really knows how to get under my skin!

Session 9 and The Babadook are some of the worst, most boring, most nothing things I've ever seen.

I can't believe I read through all seven pages of this thread and didn't see Paranormal Activity mentioned once.

It's not my favorite of the last twenty years, and I wouldn't say it's the best either, but it is the most profitable movie of all time.

And? Like you said, you wouldn't say it's the best either.

Still deserves recognition. Plus, "best" is very broad and subjective. Best acting? Best cinematography? Best overall? Best box office performance?

Paranormal Activity is the horror movie with the best ROI.

I thought Hereditary had a great atmosphere and took some really interesting turns, and I really liked House of the Devil's throwback style.

But for me, the scariest movie I have seen in the last 20 years was Wolf Creek. A friend and I were the only ones in a giant theater. It has kind of a slow start with some character building in the first 45 minutes. But once it got going I couldn't sink back into my seat far enough because of the impending dread. I'm not sure if it was great or if I had some non-existent expectation that it easily surpassed, but it creeped the ever-loving hell out of me.

What do you feel is the best overall horror film from the last 20 years? The one that you revisit or maybe one that stayed with you long after watching it.

There must be one, single horror film that you feel is your absolute favourite?

I wouldn't be able to choose just one...
It Follows & Annihilation stuck with me long after the movie was over.
Banshee Chapter is one of the few movies that has creeped me out since i was a kid.
The Hole 3-D(2009) is a fun homage to horror films.

It would probably be a toss up between Hereditary and Get Out. Both of those have been said already though. Thatís why I decided to mention one that I was surprised had not been brought up yet.

I remember the first Paranormal Activity being a big deal when it first came out. I don't remember very much about it now. It has been so long since I've seen it.

inside is amazing. and to a lesser extent, frontiers.

i love the under the skin

recently, train to busan is fantastic.

more of a comedy, but i absolutely love deathgasm.

the wailing doesnít get talked about enough.

those are the ones that come to mind quickly.

halloween 2 is interesting, but it wouldnít even be the best horror release the year it came out. so letís chill on the best of list for that one.
I'm going with Session 9. It has such a creeping dread associated with it. Incredible, underrated performances from everyone in front of and behind the camera.

Haunting of Hill House for me, hands down, although think The Babadook was very good and smart.
