Holiday 2020 and officially "PlayStation 5" like we didn't know lol. Hardware based RTRT in the GPU direct from Cerny confirmed.

Wow I wonder how much wired paid for these exclusives. Pretty impressive to get the scoop on both reveals.

Waiting for the complaints about the controller having haptic feedback wasting battery life hahaha

Mentions a mic hole and that it is suspiciously similar to the recent patent for sonys version of Alexa maybe we will get it after all? As long as I can turn it off that's ok with me.

"adaptive triggers" that can offer varying levels of resistance to make shooting a bow and arrow feel like the real thing—the tension increasing as you pull the arrow back—or make a machine gun feel far different from a shotgun. It also boasts haptic feedback far more capable than the rumble motor console gamers are used to, with highly programmable voice-coil actuators located in the left and right grips of the controller.

Catching up with MS and Nintendo is a good move.

And for those worried it has a 4K optical drive that will play 4K movies from disc as well as games utilising the 100gb UHD discs too.

However, game installation (which is mandatory, given the speed difference between the SSD and the optical drive) will be a bit different than in the PS4. This time around, aided in part by the simplified game data possible with the SSD, Sony is changing its approach to storage, making for a more configurable installation—and removal—process. "Rather than treating games like a big block of data," Cerny says, "we're allowing finer-grained access to the data." That could mean the ability to install just a game's multiplayer campaign, leaving the single-player campaign for another time, or just installing the whole thing and then deleting the single-player campaign once you've finished it.

Product manager Toshi Aoki says the controller team has been working on haptic feedback since the DualShock 4 was in development. They even could have included it in PS4 Pro, the mid-cycle refresh—though doing so would have created a "split experience" for gamers, so the feature suite was held for the next generation. There are some other small improvements over the DualShock 4. The next-gen controller uses a USB Type-C connector for charging (and you can play through the cable as well). Its larger-capacity battery and haptics motors make the new controller a bit heavier than the DualShock 4, but Aoki says it will still come in a bit lighter than the current Xbox controller "with batteries in it."

Bigger battery confirmed

The news that the battery is bigger should please most who wantrd that and i believe the Haptic Feedback much like rumble features can likely be turned off however Sony said that the weight of the prototypes less than the Xbox pad with batteries in it. So should still be a good form factor. The pin hole like the patents probably a testing bed for features for Sony to decide whether to include it come launch imo. It's interesting to know that Haptic Feedback has veen ready as far back as PS4 Pro launch and been held off till PS5 to not split the immersion.

Regarding the SSD, i felt it was neat that you could install parts of the games you wanted between MP and SP as well as delete one part when done with it. That's hopefully gonna mean devs split patches between MP & SP too. Regarding repeated assets to speed up read speed on games, Spiderman had something repeated 400 times. Imagine now having that space and the many more duplicates just for gaming. The same games that took up 50gb+ can likely be done in far less space and means game worlds can be significantly more detailed with only a single asset needed.

I'm really excited to see the new UI they're promising tbh. That's been a helluva thing most want changed and to be far faster than it is presently.

Hopefully they will have at least one quality triple A title ready for the launch *cough*Bloodborne 2*cough*, because the PS3 and PS4 launch titles have been TRASH.

A day-1 4K/60 fps patch for Bloodborne 1, God of War and Spider-Man would be great too.

I'm gonna have to hold back my expectations for haptic Rumble because so far it sounds just like Nintendos HD Rumble in their Switch Joy cons and I struggle to tell the difference between different rumbles.

That's slightly disappointing. They have BD-XL out there which can store slightly more, and is probably cheaper to manufacture than what I can assume is a proprietary version of a BD drive, so why go with that?

Also, since they're going with a new controller for the console, they should go back to incorporating analogue buttons, so if they do go with PS2 and PS3 backwards compatibility, we won't get any awkward moments playing MGS.

Interesting read.

The best part,

We want games to load like they did in the cartridge days. That’s what I’m talking about!

UHD BD movies! Yes, giving physical media some well-needed support!

It's taken 8 years for sony to get to the point where they are just now selling write once 4 later BD XL discs. At $13 EACH they are still very expensive and of low yield, so whilst they are available it's not mass produced in anywhere near the quantities and yields as the 100gb triple layer discs.

It's not to say they wont use them post launch though if and when they need them.

I still dont think we will see many two disc games anyway. It took 5 years for one to hit PS4. Games will be bigger next gen but I dont think were going to go from an average size of less than 50gb to an average size of 100gb+

And if 20gb of space is needed after they fill up the 100gb disc they will probably just make us download it just like Nintendo does on the Switch.

Well i guess "technically" they will launch with access to AAAs via PS5 release (plus patches?) and BC. I think Sony are really holding back though for a 2020 reveal of their launch plans so that PS4 can have one last decent Holiday sales period with TLOU Part 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Modern Warfare etc.

The way that the article described haptic feedback on what demo they tried, it seemed to work quite well so could be a better implementation than what Nintendo perhaps managed.

Also, don't forget that no longer needing to duplicate assets will likely save a LOT of space from the storage currently taken up on such games to instead be used by assets to make worlds much more dense and expansive. So GB to GB the worlds can be far larger and less restricted by technical constraits but moreso by imagination which to fill such worlds already is taking a ridiculous amount of people and time working on games.

Just a year or so to wait. And save up!

399, but no higher than 449. That's my price flag in the ground.
