after having two boys I really moved my exercise from general bodybuilding and lifting to circuit training, plyometrics, and extended sets. Still lift but this moves away from the overall mass building to just fitness. Its easy to get bored or burnt out with the same circuits. Does anyone have any exercises (core, plyo, ect) they particularly like to band together in a circuit or extended set?

I can't answer the OP's question. But, let me add for those who don't reg. visit the gym or are getting older....
For me personally, as other two members have pointed out mixing up the routine and adding variety has been the key for me to consistently go to the gym. I know what doesn't work for me Just having a gym membership and creating my own routine (individual workouts on my own). I tend to revert back to eliptical or stairs. I end up bored and not advancing my workout. I also tend to work out less if I do lunch or evening workouts. I'll find reasons to skip the gym. What does work for me: Group classes. I like having a trainer say "do this for x reps". Stop and do X for another set. etc etc. Having a professional create a workout and keep track of the clock etc allows me to just concentrate on form and push myself. Since I'm on the older side, I like to pick out another member in the class to compete against in my mind (or at least when we aren't paired up). It may sound stupid, but it helps to motivate me when I can keep up with the 20-30 year old members. Another factor in success is to take the classes first thing in the morning. I want to get up and "get it out of the way". When I'm done, I feel like I've already accomplished something today. Plus, the elevated levels of dopamine to start the day is a positive. The workout isn't hanging over my head, it's DONE for the day. I found a gym that has very early classes, I shower there and still make it to work (with commute) by 7:15 or so. My overall point is be honest with yourself and realize what will create a path for success or what may hold you back. When you start to see results and feel a level of increased energy etc...it's a great motivation to know you are on the right track. |

As the years have gone by I have changed my workout times. For example when I started working out consistently I was seventeen (1985) and I liked to hit it in the evening. Typically between 7 and 8 P.M. But I was in the Army for many years and we had physical training (PT) start at 6:00 in the morning. As a result I only do early morning workouts if I have no other options. Hate getting out of bed and going straight to the gym. My energy levels are not very high that early and I feel tight which no amount of stretching/warm-ups seem to change. I prefer early afternoon myself. I'm fortunate that my job consists of four twelve hour shifts followed by four days off. I go to the gym on my days off and don't worry about it when I'm working.
