One of the finest directors of the Golden Age, I figured it was about time Billy Wilder had his own dedicated thread.

I JUST re-watched my dvd of this two nights ago and it really is wonderful- has Wilder and Hawk's signatures all over it, so it's a perfect collaboration. I'd love for Criterion to get a hold of it.

Eureka have announced a MoC of "A Foreign Affair".

https://eurekavideo.co.uk/promotions/billy-wilder-sale/ Most are region locked but "Irma la Douce" and "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" will work with the top menu trick on any Blu Ray player. Last edited by Dailyan; 04-09-2020 at 02:44 PM. |

Love this guy, big fan. I already own the German release of A Foreign Affair but I'll happily get the UK release too for the Billy Wilder interview alone.
![]() Does anyone know if Five Graves to Cairo and The Emperor Waltz have forced subs? Last edited by deckard82; 04-09-2020 at 03:03 PM. |

As for TEW, I'm not sure. I would say they are not forced, as my two other Remini releases (City Streets & Somewhere in the Night) don't have forced subs. |

It's also worth noting the short film "Death Mills", an informational film made for the War Department in 1945. There were two versions: one German and the other English. Though not credited, Wilder is believed to have been the producer/writer/director for the English-language version.
It's included in the Kino Classics edition of The Stranger: ![]() |

Me and a couple of buddies do a "Director Day" every few months and rotate who gets to choose the movies. We usually watch 3 and it's a great way to keep up with my friends and for us to have some good food and enjoy movies together.
I was up a couple months back and chose Wilder. A very enjoyable time.....we watched "Some Like It Hot" (which still holds up well), "Double Indemnity" (take a drink every time Fred MacMurray says baby and you'll have to go to the hospital), and "Sunset Boulevard" (was really WOW'ed by this one). I also have since watched "The Apartment" and "Stalag 17". Not a single movie of his that I haven't enjoyed so far! http://directorday.blogspot.com/2020...ly-wilder.html |
