Default 4K restoration

3 films are digitally restored in 4K this year:
  • Lasky jedne plavovlasky / Loves of a Blonde (M. Forman; 1965) - back in Czech cinemas from 6. 6. 2019

  • Spalovac mrtvol / The Cremator (J. Herz; 1968) - back in Czech cinemas from 11. 7. 2019

  • Extase / Ecstasy (G. Machaty; 1932) - back in Czech cinemas later this year

So there is a chance for Blu-ray release from Criterion, Second Run or Czech NFA then.

Wish I hadn't already pulled the trigger on the Second Run blu of The Cremator.

The restoration of Loves of a Blonde was actually completed in 2016 by NFA; in fact Cineteca di Bologna re-released the movie in Apr 2017. Very sad that Second Run didn't upgrade their DVD. Hopefully, this will be released on BD shortly after the Cannes screening...

Sure, I saw it was re-released in Italy and somewhere announced as restored. But I would say it was just new NFA scan with some little work done; according to the trailer:

It will be screened in Cannes in Classics section this year as well, where they say:

A presentation of the Národní filmový archiv, Prague. 4K digital restoration based on the original camera done by the Universal Production Partners and Soundsquare in Prague, 2019.
This 2019 restoration is frame-by-frame in 4K - new trailer (only in Czech now; with English subtitles version could be later):

P. S. it is great pendant to Forman's previous film - Black Peter:

Default Some news

1) NFA released The Films of Jan Krizenecky, the first films in the history of Czech cinema.

2) New 4K restoration of Distant Journey / The Long Journey will be screened on Berlinale this year.
Quote:
The film traces the path of Czech Jews to Germany’s extermination camps, using the fictional narrative of a family from Prague. The narrative scenes are combined with clips from Nazi propaganda films, newsreels and Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph des Willes (Triumph of the Will) from 1935. Director Alfréd Radok, who was himself interned in a work camp and lost close relatives to the concentration camps, created an artistically effectual portrayal of the horrors of the Holocaust.

The digital restoration was supervised by Národní filmový archiv, Prague and carried out at Universal Productions Partners (UPP). Both sound and image were digitised from the duplicate positive preserved by Národní filmový archiv, Prague. Missing parts of the image were retrieved from a nitrate print from the collection of La Cinémathčque de Toulouse, which was preserved at CNC.
So there is also chance someone from NFA / Criterion / Second Run will release that (at least Czech NFA should do that during this year).

Which means 10 of 11 films "best films" have been restored + all of them have/will have Blu-ray release:
3) US Criterion is also releasing The Cremator (with 4K restoration transfer - unlike the UK release).

Default Nabarvene Ptace blu ray

Why hasn't Vaclav Marhoul's epic film NABARVENE PTACE (The Painted Bird) been featured as a blu-ray release on this blog? Magic Box released a Region ABC blu ray in April. It also has a great 2 hour making of documentary on Disk 2 of this set.

I think it's a bit odd, how there doesn't seem to be (m)any Blu-rays with late Czech star child actor Tomás Holý released, as far as I'm aware. Strange, because back in the 1970s he was super popular sort of a Czech Macaulay Culkin of his time. Maybe the lack of titles is because he did so much television, biggest hit was probably the charming Jak vytrhnout velrybe stolicku (1977) aka How to Pull Out a Whale's Tooth or Upír ve vezáku (1979) aka A Vampire in High-Rise.
