Is there an existing 4K master of M? I kind of imagine it being Metropolis as it's Kino's top selling title of all time.

I also, unfortunately, can't see Sony putting The Big Heat in a Columbia 4K set. As far as the genre goes, I see them putting Gilda, The Lady From Shanghai or In A Lonely Place, as they're more popular titles. Though The Big Heat is definitely my favorite of the bunch and I wish there was a 4K release

A chunk of Metropolis isn't even Blu-ray quality as things currently stand.

The reason it sold so much was the novelty of the newly discovered scenes more than the overall visual quality of the Blu-ray. I could see Kino being reluctant doing a 4K release when a good portion of the movie as it currently stands is made up of dupey 16mm footage.

I would imagine The Big Heat would be on Sony's radar because of it's induction into the NFR as a possible future inclusion. But who (outside of Sony employees of course) honestly knows?

It would seem not. The most recent restoration, the 2011 Universum one, appears to have been done at 2K:

https://www.hometheaterforum.com/com...ration.300983/

That said, the fact that 70-80% of the original negative apparently survives, as this interview describes, would seem to make it a good candidate for a 4K restoration in Germany:

They could release the earlier version that is suitable though

Fritz Lang's Rancho Notorious (1952) will be making its Blu-ray debut from Warner Archive on January 10th!

Quote:
Synopsis
In his third and final Western, Fritz Lang unsaddles the genre to create a tempestuous cult favorite. Critics have likened the film and its theme of a man twisted by vengeance to a Lang film of a wholly different genre: film noir's The Big Heat

It is worth noting that Fritz Lang appears in a supporting
role as himself in Jean-Luc Godard's LE MEPRIS (1963)
known as CONTEMPT in English-speaking countries:

My tentative plan is to get the Kino boxset when it's on sale, for those titles, but to focus on the MOC versions of the major silents first, for their superior presentation.
Just a friendly FYI - the Kino insider mentioned a few days ago that they’re letting the Lang silent box fall out of print. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet then now is likely the time.

Yikes!!! Thank you SO much for telling me.

I've been waiting for another 50% off listing at a Kino sale, guess I know why that didn't happen.

Honestly was waiting to see if Eureka would release all the silent Langs. I'll have to jump on the set now.

So far no pre-order link but Joe May's 'Hilde Warren und der Tod' written by Fritz Lang will be released in Germany in Q2.

The only films on the Kino set that Eureka hasn't released are Lang's first 4 films. Even as a Lang enthusiast, I can't recommend those films except to complete a collection. IMHO, they are not really good and give no hints of the greatness which came later. Also, unless I am mistaken, at least two of these are SD and not HD in the Kino set. And none of those films have any supplements.

net: If you are getting the Kino box set just for these, then you are paying a lot of money for those lesser films in bare bones edition, imho. But technically, yes, that is the only way to get 100% of Lang's silents.

Note: I say all of this knowing that if Eureka put out a LE of these films stacked with supplements and a booklet, I would get it. LOL

Blu-ray World Premiere 2023 - Fritz Lang - Hilde Warren und der Tod - YouTube
Love the premise. Will def check this out. While he’s no Lang, Joe May was a great director in his own right.

I seriously need to catch up on those Lang Eureka blu-rays. I only have Metropolis, Die Nibelungen and Der müde Tod.

The other three Warner titles are good to great, though, so here's hoping they're in the works, since, as is typical of WAC, they seem to be working their way up from bad.
Interestingly, the Cinémathèque française is showing a 35mm print of The Blue Gardenia next week: https://www.cinematheque.fr/seance/38396.html

This is the first record of a confirmed 35mm screening I've been able to find since the 90s, basically. The listing does note "Film rare, copie en état médiocre" (i.e. "rare film, print in mediocre condition")

Has KL given a sense of when they may be restocking their Lang Silent Films set?

I've been checking their site and Amazon every week or so.

Can't believe I let it slip by the first time it was available.
