That is beautiful. I prefer my Metropolis in black and white, unedited, and without Pat Benatar and Loverboy on the soundtrack though, so no double-dip for me.

I just ordered Die Nibelungen at long last.

Fritz Lang is one of my favorite directors of all time, but I had put off ordering Die Nibelungen because the idea of watching a five-hour silent movie has seemed mildly daunting. I have a feeling that I'll get a kick out of it, though.

Yeah, I've had my BD for a few years, but the runtime always made me put off watching it. But a few months ago I said enough is enough, and I watched it over the course of 2 or 3 days. It was a great experience, and I'm sure you'll love it. It's technically 2 films, and the tone is quite different in them, so it wouldn't hurt to split them up if you had to.

The second half of Die Nibelungen bored me to tears. Siegfried however (the first half) was amazing and engaging.

I watched Die Nibelungen in its entirety today.

As I've posted before, I was intimidated at the idea of watching a silent film that is almost five hours in length. This morning, though, I decided to put on my big boy boots and tackle this epic in full.

Die Nibelungen gets off to an almost lightening fast start, fortunately, and throws the viewer right into some grand film sets. The fire-breathing dragon sequence must have been quite a challenge during the day, and it still looks spectacular. After being hooked by the first half hour, I settled into the groove, and the rest of the story held my interest. I admittedly enjoy the first film, Siegfried, most of all, because of its many fantastical visual wonders. The second film, Kriemhild's Revenge, is an insanely eye-catching tragedy all its own, though, and I cannot help wondering if Akira Kurosawa drew influence when he made such dark masterpieces as Kagemusha and Ran.

I agree with others here that Die Nibelungen is just as engaging, if not more so, than The Lord of the Rings films.

The documentary on the second disc is quite informative as well, in terms of discussing the editing of the film in Germany.

Exact opposite for me. The first film didn't bore me exactly but I really had a hard time staying engaged. I really enjoyed the second film though.

I found the second half to be just too much battle montage for my taste. It really began to wear on me. Much like the complete cut of Metropolis, most of the material is brilliant, but if this had been made just 10 years later, much of this material would be on the cutting room floor. Editing had not reached it's apex yet. I think Lang's editing began to make huge strides on Spione and Frau Im Mond and pretty much reached perfection with M.

I have most of the early stuff on Blu-ray (all except Spies, I think), so this thread has inspired me to watch them in chrono order, to see how his style develops.

Good news for Region A folks, Kino has confirmed that they are releasing Women in the Moon, Spies, and Dr. Mabuse the Gambler next year. They're also making a Fritz Lang boxset which will presumably have some/all of these in them! I'm so glad these are finally coming out stateside

I made a thread about it here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=264483

It just makes me really angry that Eureka is unwilling to upgrade The Indian Epic to bd when they've already released it on sd as part of the MoC series years ago. It has obviously already been released in Germany, but with no English subs that release is pretty useless to me.
really wish more people would ask Eureka to upgrade this title to bd.

They most likely haven't made enough cash to justify a BD release. In the end they're not going to willingly put out a release that is unlikely to sell.

Can't recommend those two enough. Anyone with even a passing interest in the silent era, or Lang in particular, should be all over these.
