PSP if you don't have an iPod. DSi if you do.

Both have their pros and cons, but at the time, I'd probably go with the DSi. I don't see why having an ipod or not having an ipod makes any difference. The DSi can play music on an SD memory card, and the PSP can play saved music. But that really means nothing to me. I look at the specs and games when I buy systems. The DS offers more games than the PSP. However, if you want quality over quantity it wouldn't be that bad of an idea to go for a PSP. DS has always been a system for me, but again, that's just me.

My 2 sons each have a DS and I have a DSi. I just have so much fun with it and it is easy to connect to internet(DSi). I do wish that I could watch movies on the DSi but the games are good enough.

Both are awesome, and both have benefits over the other. There really is no "better" choice if you ask me. I have owned GameBoys and just about every -- if not all -- models in that lineage, so I'm a bit partial to the DS in this particular context. I do know for sure, though, that the PSP has way better graphics and a bigger screen. Those are un-debatable facts.

Now as far as gameplay, that's where you're going to have to choose. There are a ton of games for the DS, so you're surely likely to find something you like. There are plenty of games for the PSP as well, and you also have that movie-on-the-go option with their proprietary movie cartridge thing that they do...although I think that's kind of fizzled out lately since it hasn't seemed to catch on.

I got a PSP last year and got a DS lite a few weeks ago (thanks jk!). The DS certainly has more of a childish feel to it, because it seems less fragile, and a greater amount of the games for it seem very cartoony and geared toward kids. But for whatever reason, the DS seems like it's less likely to be embarrassing to whip out in public if you are an adult.

Both are fairly hackable, but I'd give an edge to a PSP because if you install custom firmware, along with ROMs for NES, SNES, Sega, Gameboy, etc. (which a DS can do, if you have the right stuff for it), a PSP can played ripped copies of your PS1 and PSP games. If you get a big enough memory stick, you can carry around a large amount of games, and not have to deal with the hassle of carrying around those little UMD discs, or whatever the cartridges for a DS are called.

One of the first games I played after getting a PSP was Final Fantasy VII.

Anyway, I'm not really making any sense, and it's hard to really put one over the other.

I recommend going over to Metacritic, and browsing through the highest rated DS and PSP games, and see which one has more games that interest you.

^ I've been highly tempted to get the DSi, but just haven't brought myself to do it yet. I really like how the new one looks a little more adulty and has larger screens than the DS/DS Lite. It's not backward-compatible with older GBA games, though. Of course there are hacks available for playing old games via emulation. I have the R4DS for that purpose (for my original DS — I never got the Lite) and it rocks.

There are rumors that a PSP2 will be out by the end of the year. It will have a sliding screen which unveils the controls, and will include a 2nd analog stick. Apparently it will also not play UMD discs at all, and will instead rely on digital downloads from the PS store for all of its games. I think there's info about it in the PSP forum.

Then if that happens, I might not buy a PSP2 at all unless they manage to bring the PSN cards over here to Europe. I just can't see the reason why Sony won't do this. It's not going to kill them.

As for consoles, I had a PSP (original 1000 model) before the dog chewed it up. Didn't have the money or time to buy a new one. Also, there was a severe lack of real games for the system around that time so I didn't risk buying a new one. I don't have a DS on the other hand. If I were to choose, it would be a tough choice. If I go with the old DS or DS lite, I wouldn't have the DS shop channel that the DSi has. If I buy the DSi, I wouldn't be able to play my GBA games due to the lack of an expansion port. That also means anyone buying that Guitar Hero game for DS would be screwed.

The DSI will play DS games still, right?

Yes, obviously. Its not like Nintendo made games exclusive for the system.
