When it comes to Nolan:
The lower the box office $$$, the better the film

1. Following $48K ($6K budget!!)
2. Memento $25M
3. Prestige $53M
4. Insomnia $67M
5. Interstellar $188M
6. Dunkirk $190M
7. Batman $200M

Reason is that the more Marketing Executives are involved in your film, the crappier the end product.

Same reason why a great painter is not a great salesman. He's great at art, not business and markets. Once a salesman shows up and starts telling him to change his painting, he's no longer engaging in art. OF course, there is a scale involved as every film has some "business" aspect, but in terms of that scale, the lower the budget, the less the businessman is dictating to the painter what to do.

Excellent observations. I read an article about Paul Schrader earlier today that touched on this very thing, about executives getting involved and ruining it. Here's the relevant paragraph:

[Show spoiler]When Dying of the Light was released in 2014, its writer and director, Paul Schrader, thought his career was over. The film, which starred Nicolas Cage as a CIA agent trying to catch a terrorist before losing his mind to dementia, had been taken out of Schrader’s hands because he’d deviated from the formula set by the movie’s financiers, which predicted that if it included x number of action sequences in y number of minutes, they’d earn z percent on their investment. (The financiers said Schrader’s cut of the film differed from his original script; Drive director Nicholas Winding Refn, an executive producer on Dying of the Light, says Schrader’s version was “absolutely terrific.”) If the predicament sounds beneath the screenwriter of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull and the director of American Gigolo, Blue Collar, and Mishima, that’s because it was. “I never cared that much for final cut in the past, because you were always dealing with studio heads who were movie people — they all liked movies. But now I was dealing with financial people,” says Schrader, 71. “That was a very, very bad experience. I spiraled into alcoholism and depression, and I thought that was it: The last film in my career was going to be a fiasco.”

UO: I'd rather watch the Richard Gere Breathless than the Godard Original.

UO: 1941 is one of Speilberg's best 5 films

UO: Baby Doll is Kazan's best film

UO: Ryan's Daughter is one of David Lean's best 5 films

UO: Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle is Rivette's best film (at least the most entertaining)

UO: The Farrellys are awesome

The raptor sequence in Jurassic Park: Lost World is better directed than everything that follows in the Jurassic Park series.

Isn't that a given seeing as Spielberg is an infinitely better director than the dudes that helmed 3 and 4?

Honestly, I may prefer Lost World to the Original (kind of like how Temple of Doom may be my favorite Indy)

New Blade Runner was big disappointment. I liked the OST and it did at least look good (not stunning though) but i found the film to be a bore and to me it feels like this is going to be yet another film that no one remembers 10 years from now. Even the best part that was the interraction with the MC and the AI wasn't all that well done and what else is there really to this movie? There's even all kind of stupidites like lack of cameras or security in general on police station.

And what really pissed me off was that use of the track from the first movie at the end. This movie did not earn that.

A Quiet Place starts off good but it gets progressively cheesy, mawkish, and predictable as it goes along, ultimately achieving maximum cringe with that last shot. It was hard for me to restrain my laughter when the credits started rolling. It's no more sophisticated than the typical Hollywood horror movie, it just has a silent gimmick to go with it.

Gods of Egypt is perfectly fine popcorn escapism. Big on vision, little on cerebrum. What it also is from head to toe is pure fantasy. Nothing about it is based on fact. It has more in common with Lord of the Rings than Cleopatra(ok bad example). So complaints of cultural innacuracies and casting no-no's is silly...

Vertigo is a meandering and excruciating first 90 mins followed by an okay final half hour.

On the other side of things, Freddy Got Fingered is legitimately good as a parody of the late 90s comedy formula.

The prequel trilogy is better than Eps 7 and 8 and RO.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park is actually pretty decent. It's a stronger film than Jurassic World.

Great to see Star Trek: Nemesis finally getting some love. I have loved it since I first saw in back in 2003 when it came out in the UK . However I also really loved Star Trek Beyond.

That's not a Rivette film. It was made by Éric Rohmer.

The one thing I didn't like about the interaction between Joe and Joi was when she brandishes Pale Fire. It was almost embarrassingly sophomoric in its attempt to impress us with the film's intellectual credentials. Unnecessary. Firstly, the fact that a few lines from the book serve as the dialogue for the baseline test should be enough for those curious enough to do some further digging as to the origins of those lines, and secondly, I'm sure a quick passing shot of the book in Joe's apartment would've been enough for most observant audience members to realise it symbolises something important. Heck, there's nearly an industry built on barely-seen background objects in Kubrick films that signify a lot more than their all-too-brief screen time. It's a nitpick for sure, lol.

Agreed though I do want to give Vertigo another shot. I've heard from quite a few people that it gets better with repeat viewings.

Neither of these characters have much screentime but Tyrell to me is much more memorable because his character at least has significance. Wallace feels more like a character that is there to just to have big baddy.
