I don't know why everyone is saying physical stores almost don't sell discs anymore. The electronics store around the corner is where 75 % of my collection comes from. They stock a lot of discs. Half of the second floor is dedicated to DVD/Blu ray/4K/CD/Vinyl. And good prices too. Only the stuff that isn't released in Belgium I order online. Which is probably the other 25 %.

I have purchased a fair amount of physical entertainment and since the early 80's, for the most part, only have to go to the mail box or front door to retrieve it.

Just how much longer will there be mall shopping of any kind? Mall's seem to be not doing so well as seen here.
I don't see what's wrong with going to a physical store ? It's only a 10 minute walk and when I get home I can watch them immediately if I want to.
It's not even located in an overcrowded mall.

I wish I had such a well stocked store within a 10 minute walk from my home and in a country known for its excellent chocolate.

Yes. We only have DVDs in our system, but I have digital access to Kanopy and Hoopla (different library system), so I get my fix there, as well.

Don't forget our beer. Foreigners seem to like it a lot.
At least that's what they tell me.

Delerium Tremens/Nocturnum and Chimay Bleu are my favorite Belgian ales. They carry a steep premium in the states, though, so I only have them every once in a while.

BD-DLs take about 40-50ish minutes to burn at near capacity, similar to a DVD-9. For the capacity, I'll easily take burning BDs over DVDs. UHDs also have higher read speeds, which could theoretically translate to higher burning speeds.

Are UHD players able to read these kinds of discs? If so, the only thing that would be currently missing is the authoring software for consumers capable of finishing the video in compliance to UHD specs (HEVC, 10-bit color, 2160p, WCG, HDR10, etc.) and burning it to the disc, right?
The XL format was extremely niche and required a dedicated player, which I believe were only released in Japan. There may be some other Blu-ray players that support BD-XL, but they would be in the minority. Only the most hardcore of enthusiasts would have ever used XL discs, and as much of an enthusiast as I am, I have never used them, and the cost is disproportionately high when I could just use BD-50s instead. Most Blu-ray authoring software won't even natively support disc capacities over 50GB either (though higher-end stuff like Encore might).

I believe BD-XL specs are akin to regular Blu-rays, and I doubt that BD-XL discs would have the requisite bandwidth to be able to play 2160p content natively as per UHD Blu specs, and they certainly wouldn't be read by UHD Players as UHD discs either. The packaging for UHD releases disclose the discs as being UHD66s and UHD100s, indicating that UHD100s are distinct from BD100s.

I've also read that there are UHD50 discs, but I'm not aware of any currently-available releases that have used them.

Oh yes, I'm definitely a chocolate fan. For me personally, the best would be Guylian. Their chocolate is just . Especially the seashells.
About 15 years ago I used to deliver there and I always left with a bag full of free chocolates. Back then they had seashells with strawberry and gingerbread cream filling.
But I don't see them anymore so I don't know if they still make them.
They export a lot so they're pretty common everywhere. I saw them in stores when I was on holiday in the US and Australia.

As Vilya would say, you can order them here:

https://www.guylian.com/nl/

There's an option to put the site in English.

Cote d'or would be my second choice but they merged with Kraft foods so it's now in American hands.
Also Callebaut has very good chocolate. A lot to choose from.

I like your positivity, that's the kind of attitude we need more of . Of course, a bulk of my current collection does come from online orders, mainly because they're titles you'll seldom see on regular store shelves, but on the occasion I have spotted an item I have already ordered online on a store shelf, I tend to say to myself: "Maybe I should have bought it right here instead, it makes it feel a little more special "

Well, that I didn't fully understand before. I guess that explains why most if not all UHD players I've seen list BD-XLs as an incompatible format. Kind of a shame, really, because that means we currently can't record our home movies on UHD discs...

I burn my discs at the slower speeds, typically 4X, as I have been told many times that doing so results in a more enduring result. Whether I use a DVD5, DVD9, BD25, or BD50 depends on the size of my burning project. Sometimes I make exact clones (for back-up) with menus and everything intact and sometimes I make data discs with the core files that I want.

It does take substantially longer for me to burn a BD25/BD50 than it does to burn a DVD5/DVD9 and that is to be expected as the amount of data being read and burned is much greater with the former.

I have never tried using BDXL as they are just too expensive averaging over $5 per blank disc and only my computer would recognize them.

From what little reading that I have done, UHD discs are different than BDXL discs; their storage capacities are similar, but there are many differences.

You can channel your inner by reading these white papers; I only skimmed thru them.

http://www.blu-raydisc.com/Assets/Do...0806_clean.pdf

^"In the case of 66/100GB discs, recorded data density in tangential direction is increased comparedwith 50GB discs. Therefore, 66/100GB discs can achieve higher data transfer rate at the same linear velocity. In the Ultra HD Blu-ray™ format, a Default TR(Transfer Rate), a Low TR Option and a High TR Option are defined."

http://www.blu-raydisc.com/Assets/Do...0817_clean.pdf

^" physical specifications of Ultra HD Blu-ray™ discs. Dual-Layer (DL) disc of 50 GB & 66 GB and Triple-Layer (TL) disc of 100GB are applied for ROM. The liner density of 66 GB DL and 100 GB TL ROM disc is same as that of 100 GB BDXL™. 50GB Ultra HD Blu-ray™ disc cannot be played back by the players designed with Blu-ray Disc™ Read-Only format (2K/HD) specified in Mar. 2011 because of incompatibility of video coding methods, content protection systems, Disc Information, etc..."

As far as I know BDXL discs are always burned, not pressed. PS5 games will all be on pressed discs (just like every other PlayStation console).
You're probably right as that article included a link to Wired for that information and that link now leads to a removed page. I will delete that part of my post.

From glancing at other articles on the subject, most are just saying that PS5 games will be available on 100GB optical discs, but using UHD discs makes the most sense for several reasons.

In the US most small independents were pushed out or bought out by the large chains many years ago. Finding a title at the chain stores here can be a challenge, example, Walmart mixes many Blu-ray titles in with DVD titles.

Proximity to store location is another concern, my closest store is 12 miles (19.3 km) away so it is much cheaper for me to order online.

Sure you are ; I bet you'll eat your share of them.

The hardest part is deciding which ones to get; the selection is better at their official website.

Oh, it's mostly large chains here too. Their collection is just huge.
They constantly stock catalogue titles too and I'm not talking about a few but literally dozens of them.

This was my last haul from them:

Ghostbusters (1984) 8€
The mummy (1999) 3€
Monos (brand new release, I'd consider this a more obscure title) 12€
The Grand Budapest hotel 7€
Destroyer (brand new release, lesser known movie) 15€
Elle (latest Paul Verhoeven) 5€

That's 50€ for 6 movies of which 2 were brand new.
They also have regular sales on TV-series. 2 seasons for 30€

I can understand that proximity is an issue if you live in a more remote area.
That's just not really a problem here. We have a lot of those stores and they're pretty widespread over the country. In the city where I live there's 4 of them.
