I also need to see the Duelist, but honestly I'd say that Scott visual style in Blade Runner is the best thing he has done at the moment. Not a huge fan of the movie, it's a 7/10 for me. |

I dont like every film he’s done but he has helmed some of my all-time favorites like Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven(DC only), Alien and Blade Runner. Nothing recent from him though has been all that great, IMO.
Either way, great filmmaker and an important person in the industry. |

Happy Birthday Sir Scott a true artist, and a legend. Thanks for creating the best sci-fi universe.

So this is a Ridley Scott vs. James Cameron thread?
I think Ridley Scott has more hits as well as more misses than James Cameron, but Scott also has more movies than Cameron, so there's that. Just looking at their science fiction works... Regardless of the differences in budget and quality, I would list Cameron's The Terminator along with Scott's Alien and Blade Runner as three of the greatest science fiction films ever made. But what does it mean when you find you've grown to love Scott's Prometheus, despite its flaws, even more so than Cameron's T2, Aliens, and The Abyss, which are obviously great solid films? There's just something about Prometheus that makes me keep coming back to it. I wish I could say the same for Alien: Covenant. Then there's Scott's The Martian, which is certainly a great film, but not one I'm drawn to repeatedly. As for for Cameron's Avatar... it just doesn't do anything for me. Here's how I would rank the Ridley Scott and James Cameron sci-fi films together: 1. Alien 2. The Terminator 3. Blade Runner ... 4. Prometheus 5. Aliens 6. T2 7. The Abyss 8. The Martian ... 9. Alien: Covenant 10. Avatar Outside of their sci-fi films, it should be noted that Scott's Legend (surprised this hasn't been mentioned that much in this thread) and Cameron's True Lies are both great movies, too. |

If we're going to do the Scott vs Cameron thing, then one thing we should all acknowledge is that Scott is way more flexible than Cameron. The former can pretty much do it all whereas Cameron seemingly sticks relatively to the same kind of giant spectacle movie. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Cameron's filmography is far more consistent, he hasn't had any bad or mediocre movies.
Scott has some bad movies, as I said before like Soldier Jane and Exodus. It can be argued that Scott at his peak has better highs sure, I'd understand that. But I take quality over quantity and JC definitely takes it. When I watch a Cameron movie, I know it won't be that serious, and I will both appreciate it and enjoy it. I had a lot of fun with True Lies, T2 and Avatar despite it flaws. I forgot that he directed Gladiator, which is an excellent film and easily on par with Cameron's films (except the first two Terminators in my opinion) but I'd place it above Aliens or Titanic I guess. |

I wouldn't consider that a JC movie, or atleast it's like saying Whedon directed JL, which was far below his usual standards. |

He's a good director, he does have good movies but since he does not write scripts and he does a lot of movies, he does have a lot of misses.
He is an all time great? I think so. One of my favorites? Absolutely not. |
