This looks promising. No DV but I know you are a Samsung fan. It’s also cheaper with more dimming zones.

The X95K also disabling local dimming for VRR is a bit of a concern, but not a huge one right now. Should more and more games start using the tech in the way Insomniac is though, then it becomes an issue for me.

These two are my leading candidates still with the QN90B probably ahead now with the conflicting reports on the X95K until we can get more detailed reports of the 85” and I can see it in person. I’ve had eyes on the QN90B a couple times now and its an impressive tv. I actually helped a friend set up an 85” QN90A last night so its a good reference for me in a home setting instead of store floor.

The QN95B sounds to be a step up but $6,000 MSRP is insane and likely means no lower than $4,000+ during the holidays. I’m not going over $3,500 and even that is a bit of a stretch.

All 4 HDMI ports on the Sammy are 2.1.

Ive been saving up for a replacement TV of my LG C1. I’m not the “typical use case” gamer. 0 experience with LG or OLED. Now 6 months later, I’ve seen the best & worst of OLED.

If I switched to LCD, I’d regret only 1 thing.

If you truly want to see how any new TV performs go to your local retailer to check them out in person.

We'll have the Samsung's QN95B, Sony's S95B, A95K, X95K, and A90J, LG's G2, and a couple other 2022 premium TVs all lined up butt next to each-other at our 2022 TV Shootout Evalueaiton event.

The only way to get the CinemaScope bars to be black with a firmware update would be too disable the local dimming zones that are near the top and bottom of the CinemaScope image areas.

As for Sony's X95K MiniLED TVs with the BackLight Master Drive Sony is not going to disable the local dimming when a bright object comes close to the top or bottom CinemaScope cropping bars just to keep the bars black at the expense of picture quality.

Sounds like my Best Buy expects to have their 2022 Sony tvs on display by mid-June based on what I was told.

I was able to compare an 85” QN85B and a 65” QN90B in person today, though not at ideal angels for both at the same time. The 85” uses a different panel type than the smaller sizes apparently and looked pretty good to my eye but the QN90B’s color was definitely more ‘full’. They have a placeholder for a 75” QN90B directly behind the 85” QN90B which should make for perfect comparison positioning when that is set up.

The Sony section is pretty far away from there though so it won’t be possible for me to have an X95K near a QN90B for 1:1 real time comparison.

I’d definitely need a side by side in-house because stores like Best Buy don’t use “Home” mode.

You can get ballpark reference for what the TV is able to accomplish as well as build quality.

The Samsung with its 4 HDMI 2.1’s is nice upgrade over last year.
Also a feature I hope all TVs never let go of is optical digital output.

Anyway regarding Sony, I wish these YouTubers would return their X95K’s for another X95X to see if there are discrepancies between panels or AKA Panel lottery.

Saw the X95K in person at Best Buy yesterday next to the X95J. It was a big improvement in my eyes. Brighter and sharper with better blacks. Mini-LED seems to be a major leap forward for sure. No sign of the A95K or the Z9K as of yet.

Specifically, I’m curious if you can get Dolby Vision to work on HDMI 1 or HDMI 2?

Found 1 person who said they get Dolby Vision on HDMI 1 from their Apple TV4K but they are limited to 4:2:0 chroma & can’t get 4:4:4

This is just me and my old TV but even with the HDMIs on the ZD9 set to standard (so basically as much bandwidth as HDMI 1.4) then all four sockets pass 4K24 Dolby Vision @ 12-bit 4:2:2 just fine.

FWIW, my X90J will pass DV@60 and 4:4:4 in either HDMI 1 or 2 on numerous devices, including ATV4K.

So off-axis viewing even if looking at it dead Center will wash out Colors when looking towards the 4 corners.

Great news! Sony has started rolling out a new firmware update which, among other things, enables local dimming in VRR mode on the Z9K, X95K, X90K, Z9J, X95J and X90J.

I’m still leaning QN90B as of right now but this update goes a long way to bring the X95K back into play for me with regards to future proofing like I mentioned before and with the reports from actual owners that the 85” performance is definitely superior to the 65”. The local dimming bug plaguing a number of the QN90Bs makes me nervous too about panel lottery if it is a hardware issue and not software.

Looking through the Rtings reviews and comparing side by side this seems to edge the QN90B in some key areas like game mode local dimming performance and a slightly wider color gamut (coupled with Dolby Vision which I consider a bonus not a deal maker or breaker). But the QN90B is stronger for contrast and blooming control at least at the 65” size.

Seems overall screen brightness is basically a wash between the two as they both get ridiculously bright.

Question if anyone owns this TV. On my Sony X950H there is a high pitched coal whine whenever I watch HDR content and it maxes out in brightness, it doesn't occur with when the scenes are darker.

Not an issue because I don't have a sound system set up, so I use my Sony WH-1000XM4 to watch movies. Without that headset, it is very noticeable as I sit very close to the TV.

I will upgrade the 65 inch TV in the living at some point and I would like to know if this coal whine is still an issue with the newer Sony models? Wondering as I like the X950H and the 65 inch version is being sold at a good price. If the coal whine is gone on the newer sets, I may reconsider.

The X-tended Dynamic Range on High is what triggers the coal whine on my X950H, but I use that setting only for HDR content. I'm not turning it off for HDR content, head set blocks out that issue.

I'm on the market for a new TV.

I can't do 1500 bucks....

It seems to me that Sony and LG are only good for top of the line level. The ratings of their 600-900 dollar Tv's don't look good.

Thinking of going with the Hisense 65 inch U7 or U8.

Right now I have a TCL 55 inch S405.

I looked at the Sony's 600-900 TV's and eh... Don't understand why they don't offer better than what they're offering at that price point.

Not seriously exploring Samsung since they don't do Dolby vision.
