I dropped you a PM about home calibration, I'm interested in hearing more about your services.

Edit: I think I just found you online... by the looks of your credentials I'm thinking I'm not quite in your league . Pretty darn impressive!

Wouldn't the Optimizer limit you though since it's a 500 nit curve (or is it 350, can't remember) compared to the DTM of the JVC? Not the most technical when it comes to those things.

Eastporters in Oakville, Ont dropped the projector down to $7,900 yesterday and my upgrade-itus hit me hard and caved. So out with my JVC 950 and hello my new JVC NX7. This thing is HUGE compare to my last one, but the picture quality is just outstanding. Even better after I got the new update installed I also threw in Alita for a quick moment to see how it handles 3D and it seems to handle it even better that my 950RB. Can’t wait to have some actual spare time to really put it through some tests

Congrats. I’m planning on making the same move within the next week or two.

Same for me. Have bought my last 3 projectors from them with the Sony 40ES being my first purchase

@ DoctorD & Silentbob;

Have to say both of you have good taste and can't go wrong with your choices.
I jumped on the RS-2000 earlier this year and it was big upgrade from my JVC RS520 (which is no slouch either).

Then when JVC dropped their DTM firmware, it was like another big jump in quality. Now all my UHD's look incredible and gone is the problem of some being too dark, blown out whites or faded or unreal colors.

Then last month I got the JVC calibrated, and WOW! ChadB dialed it in even more and straightened out my alignment and focus being off slightly. This is an incredibly sharp projector. He also got the colors calibrated right so everything looks much more realistic.

Here's my post with pics: forum thread link

Is the NX7 worth the extra money over the NX5? I’m thinking about upgrading, but not sure if I should just “settle” for the NX5 to save some money.

When I bought my NX7 from Eastporters. I went into their office to see it demoed but only had the NX5/9 setup. I didn’t bother to ask them to see the NX9 (bad enough I was going to pay what I did for the NX7) The NX5 system looked nice with their setup with good colours, depth and looked pretty sharp picture too. Though I was looking for a slightly punchier looking image because I was coming from their top tier projector the 950RB they released like 4-5 years ago(?) So I wanted a higher native contrast ratio for that and the NX7 comes close, even at half the native contrast my old one. It’s the new update that really makes the purchase worth it for my 4K games, discs, and streaming. Plus I think my 3D films look a bit better too with no cross talk noticed so far

When I bought my 950RB I was updating from the Sony 40es projector and the difference was huge. So maybe my eyes are a bit spoiled I guess to these amazing colours and blacks the JVC’s produce. I think you would like the NX5 but if you have the cash, I think you will love the NX7.

Spoil your eyes

That was my dilemma too. If money was no object, it’s easy to choose the highest priced item. But I came from the RS520 which has a native contrast of 130,000:1. They say that you don’t notice a contrast difference unless it is by a factor of 2. Well I do notice the contrast drop by going with the RS-2000 (NX7). Although it is very slight and quite tolerable. I think that the drop with the NX5 would have been too much to take.

There are some other factors too. If you don’t have complete light control, you may not appreciate the extra contrast of the NX7, so save some money and go with the NX5. I’ve read the posts of NX5 owners and calibrators that they don’t see a worthwhile difference between the two.

The NX5 is itself a VERY good projector with the improved lens, native 4K panel, fast syncing and now DTM firmware to boot. It does lack the color filter, extra iris and higher native/dynamic contrast of the NX7.

If saving some money by getting the NX5 is important, it would be hard to find fault with its performance.

This is the specific mount:

I would add that I looked at your theater, and I would then recommend the RS-2000 (NX7) if you can swing it. You probably have complete light control, especially with your black carpet, walls and ceiling.

I had the same questions and when I read the AVS site, calibrators and people that had seen them live, pretty much were unanimous in saying there wasn't that much difference between the two. I went with the RS1000 (NX5) especially since here it was $2000 difference and I don't regret it. Beautiful machine!

I will add that I have never seen the 2 projectors side-by-side. So it is very possible that I would have been completely satisfied with the RS-1000 (NX5).

Another factor to consider is whether or not you would be closing down the iris to get better contrast. The NX5 only has 1 iris wereas the NX7 has 2 and 'can' achieve a higher contrast.

After my projector was calibrated, my calibrator set up my SDR-Bright mode (which is my default for SDR) to have the iris fully open and auto iris OFF. Which I presume would put my RS-2000 on equal footing with the RS-1000. However, he did say that I have so many nits available (125) that in HDR mode he turned the color filter ON. But I have to say that I don't know what to look for to tell if it made a big difference.

My logic at the time was that I could easily sell my old projector to offset the cost of the new one, so I did spring for the RS-2000. I wonder if I would have been very content with the RS-1000.

One other thing my calibrator said when he finished....
It is a matter of personal taste whether to use the auto iris or not. He told me his technical reasons for not using it. So for a while I will keep it off.
He also knows that many customers want to 'tweak' their iris by closing it down to get better contrast and lower black floor. He warned me that any more than 2 clicks off the current settings would cause the calibration to fall apart because the grey scale is based on this particular iris setting.

For now, I am just watching it as he calibrated it. I think I do prefer (most of the time) auto iris OFF because of brightness pumping when scenes change.

My $.02...

I'm currently using the Peerless PRGUNV. I know the JVC is 45lbs and the max the mount can hold is 50lbs, so it's good to see that yours has been reliable. Looks like I can keep my current mount, which is good because I really like it lol.

I currently use Iris on Auto 1 and also used Auto 2 and I never had pumping. My iris is set to -8 for SDR and -5 for HDR. Love the PQ on this thing.

Love the mount. It's been in place for about 8 months or so and I see no sign of it failing. Very sturdy.

Jim L, I noticed you mentioned the Cheif RPMA000 mount. I have the base version of this with the plate that fits the DLA-550. Do you know if the NX series fit with a different plate or if the same setup would work with the RPMA281 plate.

Thanks in advance,
