Indeed great news for my 2nd favorite Kurosawa film (Seven Samurai is my first). Too bad Criterion lost the rights. I would have love to hear the Stephen Price commentary.

I'm not surprised by this announcement. In a few weeks, we're getting a 1 week run of the 4K restoration of the documentary A.K. THE MAKING OF KUROSAWA’S RAN. It wouldn't surprise me if the documentary restoration makes it on a Blu-ray release. Once that run is over, the very next day, we get a 1 week run of the RAN 4K restoration.

Glad to hear it'll be sooner than later - I sold my old Optimum disc a few weeks ago to make way for this! Hopefully StudioCanal decide to do a deluxe package for this one because I'm apprehensive about purchasing a 1-disc Amaray with only a few special features, even if it is fully restored.

This may be the best year on record, for Blu Ray releases, in a very long time. We're finally getting A Brighter Summer Day on BD, Stalker is being released on BD, and now we can look forward to Ran on BD this year as well!

One step forward and two steps back. Better font for Ran, but the addition of a useless review quote and stars.

I cannot wait for this release. Ran is my favourite stand-alone movie. The poetry and colors of this movie are out of this world. How Kurosawa filmed the attack on the third castle, I will never know. As far as I'm concerned, that is perfection.

Last night, I saw the restoration of the documentary A.K. I've never seen it before, so I can't compare it to any other release, but it looked good to me. I'm very glad they decided to restore it, & will be on the BD. I liked how the director a lot of times let the footage speak for itself, instead of always talking over it. It showed how meticulous Kurosawa was. It was short, but great.

Today was the start of a 1 week theatrical run for the RAN 4K restoration. I'll be seeing it next week.

I'm curious if the 4k has that green tint in cinemas. The trailer is looking rather strange. I mean, anything we get should be better than the old Blu-ray but the desaturated colors I'm not enthusiastic about.

There's no green tint in the trailer and it looks similar to the prints I've seen in the past.

I'm sorry. Teal. Going back and forth from shots from the new 4k trailer and the previous 4k trailer here:

there's a different digital color grade that's well, teal, kinda modern looking. I'm only curious if that's what to be expected on the upcoming blu-ray release.

The trailer above was the trailer that played before the documentary. The other one that was posted looks like it's just for the UK market. They do look different for sure. I'll try to make a note of how the 4K DCP looks. I've never seen the film, so I don't have a frame of reference. I wasn't in a rush to get the previous release. Glad I didn't get it.

I'm worried about this new restoration, the new trailer looks strange. The restoration was done by Éclair, their restorations for Children of Paradise and The Earrings of Madame de... were total disasters with heavy DNR.

Your words deeply frighten me.

Let's pray for the best.
