United Kingdom The Young Ones: The Complete Collection (BBC) - 28th November 2022

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BK9YHG7W

Quote:
Do not lean out of the window! Join Vyv, Rick, Neil, and Mike in celebrating the 40th anniversary of the iconic cult sitcom, THE YOUNG ONES. Released on Blu-ray for the very first time - so you can enjoy the squalor as never before. Including 10 new exclusive audio commentaries, featurettes and never-before-seen bonus material. From Scumbag College to the AEC Routemaster, this is the ultimate complete collection of this classic British comedy.

There was Mike, the suave, sensible one; Vyvyan, the psychotic punk-metal mohican; Neil, the lentil loving hippy and Rick, right-on anarchist revolutionary and Cliff Richard fan: four students - desperate for money, excitement, girls or just something to help fill the day - sharing a house. From this simple set up came an amazing speedball of comic caricature, slapstick, infantile humour, animation, musical performances, rants, violence, abuse and surreal jokes - leaving an impression as jaw-dropping as finding one of Vyvyan's steel-capped boots through our television screens. The Young Ones brought the irreverence, anarchy and energy of the new alternative comedy movement to situation comedy - and it would never be the same again.

Bonus Features - 10 NEW COMMENTARIES FROM CAST AND CREW - NEVER SEEN BEFORE DELETED SCENES - REDISCOVERED RUSHES FROM THE CUTTING ROOM FLOOR - EXTENSIVE PHOTO GALLERY FEATURING THE ORIGINAL MUSIC SCORE AND UNPUBLISHED IMAGES FROM THE PRODUCTION TEAM - RAW STUDIO FOOTAGE - A WORKPRINT EDIT OF 'SICK' - “FUNDAMENTAL FROLICS" FEATURING AN EARLY APPEARANCE FROM RIK - AND FOR THE FIRST TIME, BOTH EPISODES OF 'BOOM BOOM… OUT GO THE LIGHTS', INTRODUCED BY THE PRODUCER WHO PUT ALTERNATIVE COMEDY ON THE TELLY - ALSO INCLUDING: ‘ALTERNATIVE REBELLION’, ‘THE MAKING OF THE YOUNG ONES’ AND ‘THE GUEST STARS OF THE YOUNG ONES’ FEATURETTES

STARRING: ADRIAN EDMONDSON, RIK MAYALL, NIGEL PLANER, CHRISTOPHER RYAN AND ALEXEI SAYLE

PRODUCED BY: PAUL JACKSON DIRECTED BY: GEOFF POSNER, PAUL JACKSON

WRITTEN BY: BEN ELTON, RIK MAYALL, LISE MAYER WITH ADDITIONAL MATERIAL BY ALEXEI SAYLE

Disclaimer - These episodes have been restored and remastered using the existing film where available, with any standard definition content upscaled during this process. The special features in this release are a mixture of standard and high definition. Due to the age of the original materials, the technical quality of the extras may vary in places.

Nice, hopefully this leads to Bottom getting 'remastered' too.

Only £20 which is a decent price and some new extras.

I'd also like Filthy, Rich & Catflap to get an uncut release but I'm unsure if that was a BBC program or not.

Filthy was BBC. It was hilarious, but sadly it didn’t quite catch like The Young Ones and Bottom.
Some great gags, and the energy form the cast was amazing. The milkmen episode was simply genius. I’m hoping we will see a remaster soon.

Its maybe the best thing Ade and Rik ever did. But not many people seem to know about it for some reason! The media hated it at the time - probably because it had a go at them big time for one reason. Still quote it to this day.

Speaking of FR&C does anyone remeber "A Small Problem" that Chris Ryan was in? Only shown once, and never shown again due to complaints about its central theme ...

rik made the show though all 4 characters were gold, can't believe this is finally in HD!

certainly day 1, I hope series like The Mighty Boosh will find their way into bluray too. so many british comedies Id love to see in BD, black books is another, and I think I'm Alan Partridge has never been released on BD either. That deserves a premium treatment, Id pay anything to have a complete box set of all the tv series and movies of alan partridge in BD

Season 1 of I'm Alan Partridge is the funniest TV show of all time, there's no doubt about that.

Amazonprime has 1080p of season 1 and 2 but they're shitty upscales AND they're not the original broadcast versions(licensed music is cut out).

Yeah I'll second that. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a mentalist and can go eat a scotch egg from the petrol station.

Pretty sure it was mostly filmed in SD. I expect an upscale like the Doctor Who releases - provided you're going in with realistic expectations, I think this should look okay.

I read this, but it's not cited so couldn't verify the claim.

The Young Ones was one of the first BBC series to have most of its scenes shot "on location" using videotape rather than film. There were only two exceptions that were filmed. In episode #11, "Time", the spoof of the U.S. series, "Dallas" was filmed and in episode #12, "Summer Holiday", the red bus was filmed. Most other BBC series would continue using film on location until late in the 1980s!

It's always great to see old TV shows being released on Blu-ray. Hopefully Bottom will be considered for Blu-ray in the near future along with Guest House Paradiso. Also, I would love nothing more than to see (my all-time favorite UK show) Game On get a Blu-ray release, but that's just wishful thinking.

Oh sh*t! I literally thought about finally watching these after looking at Stephen Fry’s IMDb page and seeing he was in an episode! Heard nothing but praise! Definitely a blind buy!

DAY ONE!

There isn't a great deal of material shot on film - the opening sequences of Nasty and Time, and the final scene of Summer Holiday, that's about all I can recall - but it looks like the Beeb are (finally) going full out on the extras. Pretty exciting stuff.

Only wish they would have put the same effort into the artwork. I loved those collages of food, dirt, debris etc. on the old VHS releases, very fitting (ditto Bottom).

All the material shot on film survives and has been retransferred, plus there are trims etc in the extras.

This release also contains both Boom Boom Out Go The Lights specials in their entirety, which have never been released before in any form. I would happily pay £20 just for those.
